Raiders tied for 6th in San Diego

FIRST TWO ROUND RESULTS
CHULA VISTA, CA – Middle Tennessee men's golf returned to action Monday at the Lamkin Grips SD Classic where they played 36 holes on day one at the San Diego Country Club (par 72, 7,014 yards).
The Blue Raiders are in a tie for sixth place in the 15-team field with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday. The team led the entire field in par 5 scoring at 18-under par.
Middle Tennessee opened with a 2-under par 286 in round one and stood in third place then shot a 291 in the second 18 to drop into sixth.
No. 18 Texas is the overall leader at 6-under par while New Mexico is second at 2-under par. The Blue Raiders are just seven off the lead and only two back from third place.
Senior Joey Savoie led the charge on day one with a 1-under total 143 to tie for 14th. Savoie carded a 71 in round one with four birdies and an eagle then turned in an even par 72 in round two.
Freshman Chip Thomas had a pair of even par 72s and is tied for 18th. Thomas had four birdies in round one then added three birdies and an eagle in round two.
Freshman Ilari Saulo is tied for 27th after two completely different rounds on the opening day. Saulo registered a four-under par 68 in round one with five birdies, then had a 77 in his second 18.
Sophomore Marcus Byrd is tied for 41st after rounds of 75-72 and senior Drake Duncan is tied for 57th after recording a pair of 75s. Byrd led the team and is tied for third in the field with 10 birdies.
The Blue Raiders will play the final round beginning Tuesday morning.
