Chula Vista, Calif. — Behind stellar play in the final round of the Lamkin Grips SD Classic, the Blue Raiders surged up the leaderboard for a second-place tie with an 862 total.
The Blue Raiders fired a 3-under par on the final day and set a 2-under mark for the week.
No. 29 Ole Miss led the pack Tuesday and finished 16-under to claim the top spot, while MT split second place with No. 18 Texas and No. 28 North Carolina.
The Blue Raiders edged out co-host No. 22 San Diego State and No. 48 New Mexico, who tied for fifth, and also finished ahead of No. 20 Duke, who ended the tournament seventh.
"I'm very proud of the guys this week for the discipline and patience they showed on an extremely difficult golf course. To finish second in this field has proven once again we can compete with the best teams in the country," Head Coach Brennan Webb said. "We look forward to getting home, back to class, and then watching the Blue Raiders beat Minnesota in the NCAA Tournament before we leave for our next tournament."
Marcus Byrd led the way Tuesday, as the sophomore enjoyed his best day of the tournament. Byrd carded 4-under par 68 and tallied six birdies, including three on the last five holes. The Atlanta native began the day in a tie for 41st but leapt 23 spots to finish tied for 18th behind the strong play.
Freshman Chip Thomas also turned in his best day on the links this week at 3-under par 69. The Knoxville native recorded five birdies and finished tied for 11th in the talent-laden field.
"To finish second and not have anyone inside the top 10 individually shows our depth, which is something the guys all take pride in and the sign of a good team," Webb added.
Senior Joey Savoie logged three birdies on the front nine and ended the day with a 73 and finished the tournament tied for 21st.
Freshman Ilari Saulo carded a 76 in the final round to finish tied for 43rd, while senior Drake Duncan tied for 58th after tallying a 75.
The Blue Raiders paced the field on par 5 scoring at 29-under, and finished second in par 3 scoring at 7-over. MT also ranked third in birdies with 59 and was fourth with a pair of eagles.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action next week at the Linger Longer Invitational. The three-day tournament in Eatonton, Ga., begins Sunday.
