Softball Travels to Play UTEP

EL PASO, Texas – The Middle Tennessee softball team goes on the road for a conference matchup with UTEP this weekend. The Raiders (9-11) take on the Miners (5-18) in a three game series beginning Saturday, March 18 with a doubleheader at 2pm CST/3pm MST. The weekend concludes on Sunday, March 19 with a single game at 1pm CST/12pm MST.
The Miners and the Raiders have squared off nine times in the past with UTEP leading the all-time series, 8-1. The lone MT win came last season in Murfreesboro as the Raiders defeated the Miners 9-3. In the game, the Raiders picked up 13 hits, scored in four of the six innings they hit in, and Precious Birdsong hit her first out-of-the-park homer of the season. Megan Chocallo and Pattie Ruth Taylor combined in the circle for a complete game with Chocallo recording the win.
Middle comes into the game having had their two mid-week contests against Austin Peay and No. 4/5 Auburn called off due to extreme cold. Prior to that, the Raiders dropped three in a row to WKU (3-0, 6-4, 2-0) to open conference play.
Despite the losses, Summer Burgess and Birdsong had good weekends at the plate. Burgess hit .636 going 7-for-11 to move her season batting average up to .344. Birdsong was 5-for-9 at the plate (.556) including a walk, a double and two RBI. Kaylyn Slatter recorded the Raiders' other two RBI in the series.
Cori Jennings pitched two complete games against WKU and struck out a season-high seven in the first game before returning the next day to best that number by one, striking out eight in the series finale.
UTEP enters the weekend after also going 0-3 to open conference play. North Texas defeated the Miners 2-0, 8-6 and 9-1 (6). Prior to that, the Miners traveled to play New Mexico, splitting a doubleheader with the Lobos, losing the firs,t 7-6, and coming back to take game two, 7-4.
Cortney Smith leads the Miners at the plate with a .345 batting average, six doubles and six home runs to go with 12 RBI. Kiki Pepi leads the team in RBI with 17 while also recording four doubles, a triple and two homers on the year. Pamala Baber has a team-high three stolen bases and ten walks.
In the circle, the Miners have a 6.05 ERA with Devyn Cretz producing the lowest at 4.62. She is 4-4 on the year with one complete game and a team-high 29 strikeouts. Erika Harrawood has pitched the most innings for UTEP at 45 while accumulating 26 strikeouts for a 1-7 record.
