Blue Raiders fall to FAU in another heartbreaker, 7-6
3/19/2017 4:48:00 PM | Baseball
MT had another chance to tie the game in the 9th
The Blue Raiders (8-11, 0-3 C-USA) walked 10 FAU batters, which proved to be key in the Owls (14-5-1, 3-0 C-USA) win.
The Blue Raiders had life in the 9th inning, trailing 7-5 when Ryan Kemp reached base on an error by the Owls shortstop. With one out, Austin Dennis drew a walk, putting runners on first and second, 1 out. On the next play, sophomore Blake Benefield ripped an RBI-single to left, scoring Kemp.
During the next at-bat Dennis stole third, giving the Blue Raiders an opportunity to at least tie the game via a sac fly with one out. However, MT failed to execute, with an infield pop-up and fly out to end the contest.
The two teams went back and forth in the game, with FAU answering every MT scoring inning. The game was tightly contested throughout, with no team holding more than a two-run lead.
The turning point in the game came in the eighth inning when the Owls took the 7-5 lead with two-run go-ahead homer to left center, all while there were two outs in the frame.
MT reliever Tyler Holcombe (1-1) was tagged with the loss, while FAU reliever Kyle Marman (1-1) earned the win.
Despite the loss, three Blue Raiders ended the game with multiple hits. One of which was Riley Delgado, who blasted his first-career home run on the second pitch of the game.
Dennis started to get back on track from the plate, going 2-of-3 with a pair of walks. Second baseman Kevin Sullivan continued his hot-hitting in the series, finishing 2-of-3 with a run and RBI.
MT start its four-game home stand this week, beginning Tuesday against Lipscomb at 6 p.m. The Blue Raiders will also host rival Western Kentucky for a three-game series over the weekend.
The games will be video streamed through CUSA.tv/RaiderVision. Radio coverage provided on 92. 3 FM (WMOT 2). Live tweets are available on Twitter @MT_Baseball.
