MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders look to get back on track this weekend against the rival Hilltoppers for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Friday will be the 119th meeting between the two programs. The series is deadlocked at 59-59 with WKU sweeping the 2016 series in Bowling Green.
Senior shortstop Riley Delgado hit his first career homer against FAU Sunday to leadoff the game. Delgado's home run to lead off the game was the first Blue Raider to do so since 2011. The Miami, Fla., native followed up his first-career homer with his second career bomb Tuesday night against Lipscomb. Delgado is the first Blue Raider this season to homer in back-to-back games.
Delgado is second on the team with a .333 batting average, to go along with a team-high 29 hits.
Sophomore Blake Benefield, has swung the bat well as of late, going 7-of-16 in his last four contests.
On the mound Friday will be junior standout Jake Wyrick. The southpaw has been crucial to MT's success, as the Blue Raiders are 4-1when he starts the game. The Cleveland, Tenn. native leads the team with a 2.63 ERA (10th in C-USA) and in strikeouts with 34 (T-5th in C-USA).
Two-way player, Devin Conn will get the start Saturday. Conn started last Sunday at FAU, going 3-2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out two. Conn has started 10 games in right field for MT.
Southpaw Cody Puckett will be on the mound Sunday for the Blue Raiders. Puckett was a projected starter coming into the season, and has made three appearances out of the bullpen so far this season. The senior has compiled a 3.72 ERA in 9-2/3 innings of work.
The Hilltoppers are on a three-game skid of their own, coming off a C-USA series loss at home to UAB and a mid-week loss to No. 19 Kentucky.
WKU will start lefty Ryan Thurston Friday night, and RHP Paul Kirkpatrick Saturday. Sunday is TBD. WKU's lineup is led by catcher Hunter Wood, who leads the team in hits (26), home runs (4), and RBI (18) coming into the series.
The Blue Raiders leading hitter, Aaron Aucker, is out for the weekend series after missing the final two games of the Florida Atlantic series, pulling his hamstring in Friday night's game. Aucker is hitting .345 this year, with a team-leading 15 RBI, while only playing in 15 of MT's 19 games.
Key relief pitcher, Reid Clements will miss the series due to an arm injury. Starting pitcher Tyler Hasper was a late scratch due to a shoulder injury.
