Senior pours in 21 at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA – One of the greatest individual careers in Lady Raider history ended when Middle Tennessee dropped a 70-57 setback to Georgia Tech in Round 3 of the WNIT here Thursday night.
It marked the final game of senior Ty Petty's illustrious career. Petty is the only senior on Middle Tennessee's squad, and she certainly left her mark as one of the program's all-time greats.
Petty poured in a game-high 21 points, dished out six assists, collected five steals and pulled four rebounds while playing 40 minutes. She was the only Lady Raider in double figures.
Rebecca Reuter tallied nine points and had four rebounds, while Alex Johnson and Kyla Allison had eight points each. Johnson also pulled six rebounds, which led Middle Tennessee.
"I'm proud of our team," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We got off to a slow start and couldn't get it back, but the young ladies battled to the end and gave everything they had.
"What more can you say about Ty Petty? She left it on the court, everything she had. Ty is one of the best I've ever coached. I hope these young players have watched and learned from her because they have had an opportunity to learn from one of the best. I know I will miss her, and so will our fans."
Petty said playing for the Lady Raiders and representing Middle Tennessee was one of her greatest achievements.
"I am going to miss it," Petty said. "Representing this University and program, while playing with all of my teammates has been something I will cherish forever. I can't thank all of my coaches and all of the fans enough for what they have meant to me. Coach Insell has helped me grow so much as a person and a player. I just didn't want to see it end, so I gave everything I had until the very end."
Petty leaves the program as the only Lady Raider in history to score 1,400-plus points, dish out 500-plus assists, pull 300-plus rebounds and collect 190-plus steals.
Georgia Tech (20-14) came out red-hot to start the game and vaulted to a 29-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. ACC freshman of the Francesca Pan led Tech's fast start. She scored 16 in the first quarter on 6-of-6 shooting, but never hit another field goal and finished with 18 points; however, the damage was done.
Middle Tennessee (23-11) put together a strong second quarter, holding Georgia Tech to seven points to pull within 34-20 at the intermission. The Lady Raiders continued to fight and got as close as 11 but could never get the game back to single digits.
Shayla Middlebrooks (3), Charity Savage (3), Abbey Sissom (3) and Gabby Lyon also got into the scoring column for Middle Tennessee.
