Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After over a week off from matches, Middle Tennessee women's tennis is set for a showdown against in-state foe Memphis Friday, followed by a match against VCU Sunday.
"We've really tried to enjoy our time as a group, enjoy practice and enjoy working hard," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said of the extended practice time. "We've been working on our doubles a little and resting our bodies as much as we can to prepare for the last half of the season."
Memphis travels to the Adams Tennis Complex for its 2 p.m. match against the Blue Raiders with an 8-5 record this season. The Tigers began the year winning three straight over UAB, Lipscomb and Chattanooga, before falling in four straight against LSU, Missouri, Minnesota and Ole Miss.
From March 3-18, the Tigers reeled off five consecutive wins, capping the win streak against Houston on the road before being set back by No. 38 Rice. Memphis only has winning marks at the No. 2 and 5 spots in the singles lineup, with Katherine Cao pacing the Tigers with a 9-2 record.
The bottom part of the doubles lineup has also been kind to Memphis, as it's used four different No. 3 doubles combos that have combined for an 8-4 record.
The Blue Raiders will wind down the weekend with a challenging match against VCU on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the ATC.
Penn State, Marshall and Florida Atlantic have all been victims of the Rams, who are 10-5 coming into the weekend, this year. VCU suffered 4-3 losses to West Virginia, Dartmouth and Maryland.
Janina Braun leads the charge for the Rams with a 12-3 mark in the dual match season, with seven wins coming at the top spot in the lineup. She's joined at the front of the lineup by Anna Rasmussen, who boasts a 9-3 mark on the season, winning six matches at the No. 2 spot. Darya Berezhnaya is currently on a hot streak for the Rams, winning her last eight matches at the No. 4 spot to make her overall dual match record 10-1 at this point in the season.
"They're both good teams. I expect those matches to be a fight all the way. We want to show some pride this weekend and defend our home court," Ramsay added.
Free T-shirts will be given to all fans in attendance for Friday's match against Memphis, and there will be free pizza and koozies given out on Sunday for the VCU match. Both matches will played at the ATC as scheduled, rain or shine, and admission is free to all MT home tennis matches throughout the season.
Live stats will be available for both matches this weekend, and live updates throughout the weekend will be posted on Twitter, @MT_WomensTennis, and Facebook, MTSU Women's Tennis.
"It's great to be back at home," Ramsay said. "We have some fun giveaways going on at the matches. We want to play confidently at home, and it would be great to have a big crowd."
