Game Two of the series was moved up to Noon Saturday, due to impending weather
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee collected 12 hits in the series opener against WKU but the Hilltoppers came through in the clutch to take a 10-3 win at Reese Smith Jr. Field Friday.
The Hilltoppers dealt starter Jake Wyrick (3-1) his first loss of the season, getting to him for six runs in the second and chasing him from the game in the midst of a three-run sixth inning.
Middle Tennessee (8-13, 0-4 C-USA) will look to even the series when Tyler Hasper takes the mound Saturday. First pitch has been moved to noon in anticipation of impending weather.
There were bright spots for the Blue Raiders, who had three players with multi-hit games. Red-hot Riley Delgado led the way with a three-hit performance. Delgado was 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Ryan Kemp (3-for-4, run, double) and Drew Huff (2-for-4, run scored) and had multi-hit games.
The game also marked the return of senior standout Brad Jarreau, who had been out with an injury since the second game of the season. Jarreau was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
It was not as if Middle Tennessee did not have opportunities, outhitting WKU 12-11, but the Hilltoppers (8-15, 2-2) came through in the clutch. In fact, four of WKU's six runs in the second came with two outs when they collected five of their 11 hits. The Hilltoppers hit .381 (8-for-21) with runners on base and .462 percent (6-for-13) with runners in scoring position. Middle Tennessee, on the other hand, hit .176 (5-for-24) with runners on base and just .167 (2-for-12) with runners in scoring position.
"We had our opportunities but the difference was WKU got their hits when it mattered," Blue Raider Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "They got a big three-run home run, a solo shot and then a big two-out hit up the middle with runners in scoring position. We didn't get hits in the clutch when we had people on base and could have got back in the game.
"Our pitching depth is there. The bottom line is they just didn't get it done tonight."
Trailing 6-0, Middle Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the third. Vesser opened the frame with a leadoff single. Delgado chased him to third with a double, and Jarreau followed with a long sac fly to left. Jarreau just missed a three-run home run when left fielder Steven Kraft made a catch against the wall.
The Blue Raiders continued to chip away at the WKU lead in the bottom of the fourth, cutting it in half with a pair of clutch two-out runs to pull to within 6-3. Huff started the inning with his second hit. Kemp delivered a one-out double to put runners at second and third. After the second out of the inning, Huff made a great hustle play, bolting from third on a wild pitch and just beating the throw at the plate. Delgado's third hit in as many at-bats chased Kemp home to narrow the deficit.
Just when Middle Tennessee appeared to be getting back into the game, WKU struck for three in the top of the sixth to chase Wyrick and push its lead back to six, 9-3.
