MURFREESBORO – The Middle Tennessee men's golf team will return to action beginning Friday at the 2017 Mason Rudolph Championship in nearby Franklin, Tenn. The 14-team field will play at the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course, which will be a par 71, 7,100-yard setup.
The No. 49 ranked Blue Raiders will join host Vanderbilt, Alabama, Ball State, Belmont, Duke, ETSU, Florida, Iowa, Liberty, Miami (Ohio), Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Troy in this year's field. Vanderbilt (3), Florida (6), Duke (21) and Missouri (26) are all ranked in the top 30.
The Blue Raiders are a two-time winner of the event by taking the championship in 2011 and 2009. Also in 2009, former MT player Hunter Green was the low medalist.
Middle Tennessee Head Coach Brennan Webb will take senior Joey Savoie, freshman Ilari Saulo, sophomore Marcus Byrd, freshman Chip Thomas, and junior Hoyeong Kim in hopes of bringing home a third title.
Savoie and Saulo enter the tournament with identical team-leading 72.0 stroke averages. Savoie leads the team with 15 rounds of par or better, while Saulo is second with 12.
Byrd is third on the team with a 72.9 stroke average and has five straight rounds of par or better, including four under par rounds in a row.
Thomas owns a solid 73.5 stroke average and Kim is at 75.8. Kim is playing just his third tournament of the season and first since the spring opener in Puerto Rico.
The tournament will consist of 18 holes each day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) with tee times beginning at 8:30 AM on Friday and Saturday and 8 AM on Sunday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
