SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Middle Tennessee softball team returned for day two of the ShareSLO Mustang Classic on Saturday, March 4. The Raiders had two rematches on the day with Saint Mary's and Cal Poly. In game one, MT handled Saint Mary's in six innings for an 8-0 win. The Raiders took Cal Poly to the wire in game two but lost 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth to move to 9-8 on the year.
Game One – MT 8, SMC 0 (6)
The Raiders scored in five of the six innings they played against the Gaels with the first run coming in the first inning. Precious Birdsong reached on a bunt single and worked her way around the base path to score on a ball put in play by Austyn Whaley that was overthrown at first.
In the second inning, Lexi Cushing rocketed a leadoff solo home run to dead center for her fourth homer of the season. Then, Summer Burgess reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple down the left field line by Birdsong.
The third inning was the only scoreless inning for the Raiders despite a double by Danielle Munoz.
The Gaels changed pitchers in the fourth inning where MT added another run, making it 4-0. The Raiders got the bases loaded following a leadoff single from Deja Portillo and then Birdsong walked and Kirstyn Cuccia reached on an error. Whaley then hit an infield single to score Portillo from third base.
To start the fifth, Cushing smashed a double down the right field line. Kristin Uselton then reached on fielder's choice to short, putting runners at the corners. Burgess then put a ball in play that was mishandled by the shortstop allowing Cushing and Uselton to make it 6-0 in favor of MT.
The Raiders put the game away in the bottom half of the sixth inning as the Gaels changed pitchers once again. Cushing and Kaylyn Slatter reached on walks with Portillo getting a single to first base to load the bases once again. Then Birdsong ended it with a hit up the middle to score two runs giving MT the 8-0 win in six innings.
Cori Jennings recorded her fifth win of the year in the circle, throwing a complete game and striking out six and allowing just two hits.
Birdsong was 4-for-4 in the game with a triple, a walk and three RBI while Cushing was 2-for-2 with two walks and the solo homer.
Game Two – CP 2, MT 1 (8)
Cal Poly got on the board first in the game, picking up a run in the bottom half of the third inning. An RBI double following a fielder's choice gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders had three hits off the bats of Cushing, Birdsong and Harris before connecting in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Burgess doubled to left field and with two outs Birdsong singled through the right side to score Burgess from second base.
The game remained tied through regulation play and in the top of the eighth international tiebreaker was instated.
Keely McGee was the runner at second for the Raiders. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Portillo. The Raiders went down on back-to-back strikeouts, unable to push the go-ahead run across.
Cal Poly was able to capitalize on their runner on second base in the bottom of the eighth to get the win. A RBI single off the wall in center gave the Mustangs a 2-1 win.
Megan Chocallo took the loss in the circle in the circle moving to 0-2, she struck out two.
