Men's and Women's Basketball begin tournament play Thursday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With the regular season now complete, the Blue Raider and Lady Raider basketball programs turn their attention to the Conference USA Championships presented by MetroPCS hosted in Birmingham from March 8-11.
Both the men's and women's basketball programs locked up first-round byes for the 2017 tournament and will begin play in Birmingham on Thursday, March 9, as they each look to defend their 2016 tournament titles.
The Blue Raiders (27-4, 17-1) finished off the regular season with a 34-point win on Senior Day against visiting Florida Atlantic to set a new Conference USA record for wins in league play with their 17th.
As the No. 1 seed in the tournament, the regular season champions will have all eyes on the Wednesday match-up between No. 8 WKU (15-16, 9-9) and No. 9 UTSA (13-18, 8-10), which will be played at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that contest will face the Blue Raiders on American Sports Network at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Legacy Arena.
Middle Tennessee swept a home-and-home series against WKU this season and enjoyed a 69-59 win in its lone meeting against UTSA in San Antonio.
The semifinals will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Friday while the 2017 Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday with both rounds televised on CBS Sports Network.
Following a pair of wins to cap the regular season, the Lady Raiders (20-9, 15-3) earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Women's Basketball Championships.
MT is scheduled to play its first game Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the first game of the second session, against the winner of No. 7 UTSA (14-15, 10-8) and No. 10 Rice (17-12, 8-10). The Roadrunners and Owls will square off Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Raiders completed the season sweep against UTSA and Rice earlier in the year by scores of 77-63 and 71-61, respectively, in Murphy Center.
The first two rounds of the women's tournament will be played at Bartow Arena on UAB's campus and will be broadcast on Campus Insiders. Birmingham's Legacy Arena will host the final two rounds, with Friday's semifinals to be televised on ASN and Saturday's championship game to air on CBS Sports at 4:30 p.m.
Ticket booklets are still available from the Blue Raider Ticket Office by calling 615-631-5261 or visiting the Ticket Office website here.
