RUSTON, La. – The Middle Tennessee softball team played a doubleheader at LA Tech today, Saturday, April 1. The Lady Techsters won the first game, 4-0, but the Raiders came back to take game two, 3-1. The Raiders are now 11-19, 2-9 on the year while LA Tech is 22-13, 6-2.
Game One – LA Tech 4, MT 0 - Box Score
LA Tech took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Lady Techsters started with a double to left field and then a fielding error by the Raiders put runners on the corners. Moran Turkoly scored the first run for LA Tech by hitting a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Then a double steal following a walk scored the next run. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Marilyn Rizzato allowed the third run of the inning to come across.
In the third LA Tech added another run on back-to-back doubles, one to left center and one to right center from Turkoly and Taria Page to take a 4-0 lead.
The Raiders got runners to third base in both the third and fourth innings. Summer Burgess singled in the third inning and advanced to third base on an error by the centerfielder. However, she was left stranded. In the fourth, Morgan Harris singled through the left side; she reached on third on a stolen base and a wild pitch but like Burgess was left stranded.
In the top of the seventh, the Raiders staged a comeback as Austyn Whaley got a leadoff walk followed by Kristin Uselton hitting a single to left center. The Lady Techsters then changed pitchers and were able to get the final three outs to take the 4-0 win.
Megan Chocallo took the loss in the circle to move to 0-5 on the year. Pattie Ruth Taylor also saw time in the circle, striking out two. Offensively, Burgess went 3-for-3.
Game Two – MT 3, LA Tech 1 - Box Score
Like the first game, the Lady Techsters got on the board early. A bunt single, and then a double down the left field line from Turkoly scored one for LA Tech in the bottom of the first.
That 1-0 lead lasted until the Raiders got a two-out rally going in the top of the fifth. It started with Lexi Cushing sending a single down the right field line. She came around to score on a double to shallow left center from Kaylyn Slatter. It drops in no man's land to tie the game at 1-1.
In the seventh, the Raiders claimed the lead. MT started by Uselton hitting a single through the left side. Kirstyn Cuccia came into pinch run for Uselton and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Keely McGee. Lexi Cushing followed by smashing a single to left center field. Then, with two outs, Deja Portillo singled through the hole between third and short to bring Cuccia across and give MT a 2-1 lead.
Burgess kept the rally going by following with an infield single to load the bases and then Precious Birdsong got walked to force another run across, giving Middle the 3-1 lead.
The Raiders retired the Lady Techsters in order in the bottom of the seventh to take the 3-1 win.
Cushing and Portillo went 2-for-2 at the plate with Portillo's RBI single serving as the game winner.
Cori Jennings picked up her sixth win of the year in the circle. She struck out one and gave up just four hits in her 12th complete game.
The Raiders and LA Tech will return to the diamond for the series-deciding finale tomorrow at 10am.
