UPDATE: The Raiders' scheduled game at Austin Peay today, Tuesday April 11 has been cancelled due to weather.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team plays two midweek games following an off weekend last weekend. MT hosts Alabama State (11-26) in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 beginning at 4pm.
The Raiders are 10-0 all-time when facing Alabama State. The two sides met twice last year where MT won 9-0 in February at the Black & Gold tournament and then 5-4 in March in Montgomery, Ala.
In that 5-4 win last season, Kirstyn Cuccia was the offensive hero. She hit a grand slam in the third inning and scored the game winning run. In the seventh, Cuccia hit a two out double to left center and came around to score on a single up the middle off the bat of Danielle Munoz. For the Hornets, current seniors Valerie Centeno and Alexia Boggess each had an RBI in the game.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a C-USA high after winning their first series of the season over LA Tech to start the month of April. Then, MT faced Belmont last Wednesday, falling 6-1 in Nashville.
Against the Bruins, Middle committed four costly errors that lead to four of Belmont's six runs.
At the plate, Precious Birdsong and Kaylyn Slatter each went 2-for-3 with Birdsong recording the lone RBI for MT. Keely McGee and Lexi Cushing picked up the other two Raider hits. Following the game, Birdsong's season batting average is up to .420, seventh best in the conference while her .495 on base percentage puts her sixth.
Cori Jennings took the loss in the circle, pitching five innings with three strikeouts to move to 6-11 on the season. Her ERA is now at a 2.58 over 108.2 innings with her strikeout mark up to 64.
Alabama State comes into Wednesday's doubleheader following a three game series loss to SWAC opponent Alcorn State last weekend. The Hornets fell by scores of 3-4, 0-9, and 3-12. Kendall Core had three of the Hornets' six RBI in the series.
Leading the Hornets at the plate is Centeno. She is batting .370 on the year with four doubles, four triples and a home run. Core leads the team in RBI with 32 to go with eight home runs and a .333 batting average. Perry Hindi is also batting .333 this season in which she has picked up 17 RBI and four home runs.
As a team, the Alabama State pitching staff has a 5.68 ERA led by Vanessa Bradford with a 4.76 ERA in 103 innings in the circle. She has a team-leading 53 strikeouts with a 7-9 record. Justine Jean has seen 83.1 innings of work and gone seven complete for a 3-11 record. She has a 5.80 ERA with 28 strikeouts.
