MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee welcomes Conference USA foe UAB into town for a three-game series beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Thursday will be the 71st meeting between the two programs. The Blazers lead the overall series 39-31, with UAB getting the better of MT in 2016, sweeping the Blue Raiders in Birmingham.
The Blue Raiders have been a different team getting their three biggest bats back in the lineup from injury.
Designated hitter Aaron Aucker has missed 14 games this season due to hamstring issues. He leads the team with a .366 batting average, five home runs, and an impressive .690 slugging percentage. Aucker has hit three home runs in his last two games, while batting .438 and a 1.000 slugging percentage since returning to the lineup against ODU this past weekend.
Ryan Kemp has only played in 20 games because of hamstring problems. Kemp was named TSWA Player of the Week after his performance last week. The JUCO transfer from Columbia State CC, is second on the team with a .360 average, a .597 slugging percentage, and six stolen bases. The second baseman continued his hot-hitting, going 2-of-5 with two runs last night against Belmont.
Senior center fielder Brad Jarreau ranks third on the team with a .348 average. Jarreau has only played 15 games this season due to a broken hand suffered in the second game of the season. Jarreau is second on the team with four home runs and has been an instrumental factor to MT's recent success. The Joelton, Tenn., native tied a career high, going 4-of-5 against Belmont.
Will Small continues his dominance this season. In six appearances, the senior has yet to give up a run in 13-2/3 innings. Small has a team-best 3-0 record after earning the win yesterday against Belmont. The Atlanta, Ga., native sported a 6.27 ERA coming into the year.
LHP Jake Wyrick will get the nod Thursday night. The southpaw has struggled in his four C-USA starts and looks to get back on track against UAB. Wyrick sported an impressive sub-2.00 ERA for most of the non-conference season. The junior currently ranks T-7th in C-USA in strikeouts with 51.
Sophomore AJ Spencer will get his second weekend start of the season Friday. Spencer is coming off back-to-back strong starts, going a season-long six innings, while giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks to go along with a career-high six strikeouts last Saturday against ODU.
LHP Cody Puckett will get the start again for the fourth straight weekend. Puckett struggled in the win against ODU last Sunday. However, the senior southpaw has been strong on the mound all season.
The Blazers are coming off a mid-week 6-4 loss at Alabama and a weekend series loss at home to Marshall. UAB is struggling as of late, dropping their last six of seven coming into the series.
Their starting rotation is a strong one with LHP Thomas Lowery (3.16 ERA) going Thursday, LHP Adam Lamar (4.55 ERA) going Friday, and Saturday TBA. UAB has a team 3.93 ERA.
Brewer Hicklen leads the UAB lineup, with a team-high .355 average, .665 slugging percentage, six home runs and 23 RBI.
First pitch is set for Thursday night at 6 p.m.
