MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team split a doubleheader with Alabama State on Wednesday, April 12. The Raiders won the first game of the afternoon, 2-0, behind Cori Jennings' eight strikeouts. The Hornets took game two, 6-3. Middle is now 13-21 while ASU is 12-27.
Game 1 – MT 2, ASU 0. – Box Score
The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game one of the doubleheader and were able to hold onto that for the rest of the six innings of play.
In that first inning, Summer Burgess singled down the left field line to reach base while Precious Birdsong beat out a bunt to get aboard. Then, Morgan Harris layed down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to scoring position. Austyn Whaley followed by laying down a sacrifice squeeze bunt of her own that allowed the speedy Burgess to score from third and Birdsong all the way from second.
Jennings was able to shut down the Hornet bats through the remainder of the game, striking out at least one an inning to secure the complete game shutout, her second of the year. She allowed just four hits as she moved to 7-11 on the season.
Burgess and Kaylyn Slatter went 2-for-3 in the first game with Whaley recording both RBI.
Game 2 – ASU 6, MT 3. – Box Score
The Raiders scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Kristin Uselton got a leadoff walk and was replaced by Lauren Payne as Danielle Munoz single up the middle. Then, Deja Portillo grounded out to advance the runners followed by Kirstyn Cuccia laying down a bunt single. Payne scored on the play to give MT a lead.
That lead lasted until the top of the fourth. The Hornets got two doubles, one from Charlene Castro and the other from Alexia Boggess as well as two singles to take a 2-1 lead.
The Raiders came back in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at two apiece. Burgess led off with a single to left center and advanced as Birdsong got an infield single and Harris grounded out back to the pitcher. Slatter then lifted a sacrifice fly that the right fielder laid out for, allowing Burgess to tag up and tie it up.
However, Alabama State came back and broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Four straight singles gave them a 4-2 lead. Then, a triple from Valerie Centeno made it 6-2 as MT used Pattie Ruth Taylor, Sarah Pinkston and Megan Chocallo in the circle in the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Middle got one back. Portillo singled down the right field line with one out and made her way to third as Cuccia followed with a single of her own to right field. Burgess earned the RBI as she lifted a shot down the left field line to make it 6-3.
A strikeout ended the Raider rally and a three up, three down bottom of the seventh gave the Hornets the win.
Taylor took the loss in the circle, moving to 1-2, she struck out one. Gretchen Greer struck out two in the game while Chocallo recorded one.
Burgess and Birdsong each went 2-for-4 in game two with Burgess also scoring once and picking up a RBI. Cuccia was 2-for-2 also with a RBI.
The Raiders have a quick turnaround as they head to Boca Raton, Fla. for a three game conference series with Florida Atlantic. MT plays a doubleheader on Friday, April 14 beginning at 3pm and then closes it out with a single game on Saturday, April 15 at 12pm.
