Softball Heads South to Play Reigning C-USA Champs, FAU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team goes on a conference road trip this weekend to play three games at Florida Atlantic, the reigning C-USA champs. The series gets underway in Boca Raton tomorrow, Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader at 4pm EST/3PM CST. A single game is scheduled for Saturday, April 15 at 1pm EST/12pm CST.
The Owls lead the all-time series, 27-5 over the Raiders, which includes having won the last 12 in a row dating back to the 2012 season. MT last won in that 2012 season, splitting a doubleheader in Boca Raton. Middle picked up an 11-4 in game two of the series when both sides resided in the Sun Belt conference.
The Blue Raiders enter the series at 13-21, 3-9 C-USA after splitting a doubleheader with Alabama State yesterday, Wednesday, April 12.
Against the Hornets, Cori Jennings earned her second complete game shutout of the year; she struck out a career tying eight in the 2-0 win. Austyn Whaley earned both of the RBI as she laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought Summer Burgess across home plate from third base and Precious Birdsong all the way around from second.
Birdsong continues to lead the Raiders at the plate, batting a blistering .426 with a .500 on base percentage. Those marks rank her fifth in the conference in both categories. She has 40 hits to go with a double, a triple and a home run. Birdsong also has 12 RBI, tied for second most on the team.
Burgess is batting .324 in her freshman campaign. She has a team-leading seven doubles and 17 runs scored. Whaley leads the way in the RBI category with 21.
In the circle, Jennings is 7-11 on the year, having pitched over half of the Raiders' innings at 115.2. She has a team-leading 72 strikeouts in 13 complete games for a 2.42 ERA. As a staff, MT has a 2.66 ERA with Megan Chocallo having the lowest at 1.64 in 38.1 innings of work.
Florida Atlantic comes into the series with a 27-15 record, having picked up two wins over FGCU yesterday, Wednesday, April 12. The Owls won by scores of 3-2 and 8-3.
Last season, the Owls won the C-USA championship earned a berth to the NCAA regionals, ultimately falling to No. 1 Florida.
This season, Emily Lochten leads the Owls at the plate, batting .436 with 34 RBI. That puts her fourth highest in the league as she has accumulated 49 hits, nine of which are doubles and 15 that are home runs. That is the seventh most doubles in C-USA while Lochten's leads the league in homers. She is also speedy on the bases with 28 stolen bases, fourth-best in conference.
Madisyn Palmer comes in with 30 stolen bases, third most in the conference while hitting .336 on the season. Delaney Rickey leads the Owls in triples with three while also recording 23 RBI this year.
In the circle, FAU has a team ERA of just 1.96. A duo of C-USA Players of the Week are on the staff which includes Kylee Hanson and Tatum Buckley. Buckley won the most recent honor as she has a 1.99 ERA this year with 41 strikeouts. Amanda Wilson has seen the most innings of the Owls' staff with 118.0 for a 11-7 record. She has a 2.02 ERA with 52 strikeouts.
