MT scores 13-3 win vs. UAB
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The offensive juggernaut that has become Middle Tennessee baseball continued its ambush of opposing pitchers in a 13-3 thrashing of UAB Saturday.
Middle Tennessee (19-17, 7-8) won its fifth straight and completed its first C-USA sweep since breaking out the broom against WKU, May 1-3, 2015. The Blue Raiders improved to 5-2 on their current eight-game homestand with an offensive flair for the dramatic.
The Blue Raiders had scored double digits in four games ALL season prior to the current homestand, but they have erupted for five straight games with 10 runs or more and are averaging 13.8 runs per game on the homestand.
Saturday provided more of the same as Middle Tennessee pounded out 18 hits and overcame an early 3-0 deficit to secure victory.
Drew Huff capped a phenomenal weekend with a 4-for-4 performance that included a double, five RBI and two runs scored. He provided the game-tying double in a five-run sixth. Austin Dennis also put the finishing touches on a strong three-game series with a 3-for-4 performance to go with one RBI and three runs scored. Aaron Antonini also was strong, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Riley Delgado (2-for-5), Ryan Kemp (2-for-5) also turned in multi-hit games.
"We continued to swing the bats well and hitting is contagious," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "It is not just the hits we got, but we had players deliver in the clutch. We were able to come through with big hits in big situations, and we never quit. This entire series we really battled. I'm proud of our team and the progress we continue to make."
The offense is clicking.
The pitching was also dominant Saturday.
Senior southpaw Cody Puckett (2-1) earned the win with six innings of three-hit baseball. He allowed three runs, two earned. Freshman Devin Conn collected his first career save with two innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. Puckett surrendered an unearned run in the second and two in the third, but he settled into a groove after that. He retired seven straight during one stretch and 10 of 11 overall before leaving with one on and none out in the seventh.
Middle Tennessee trailed 3-0 going to the bottom of the sixth when it finally put together three consecutive innings, getting five in the sixth, four in the seventh and four in the eighth.
Jarreau started the five-run revolt with a leadoff double in the sixth. With one out, Aucker reached on a fielder's choice and Dennis followed with a RBI single to get the Blue Raiders on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1. Huff came through with a clutch at-bat. Down in the count 0-2, Huff doubled off the fence in right field to score Aucker and Dennis and tie the score, 3-3.
With runners at second and third and two outs, UAB opted to intentionally walk Antonini. The rookie catcher foiled the ploy when he drove a 1-1 pitch up the middle for two RBI and a 5-3 Blue Raider lead.
Middle Tennessee added eight runs over the next two innings to complete the sweep. The Blue Raiders will close the homestand against No. 20-ranked Vanderbilt Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
