MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee is riding a five-game win streak heading into the final game of its eight-game home stand, Tuesday night against No. 27 Vanderbilt at Reese Smith Jr. Field at 6 p.m.
The Commodores lead the overall series 60-24. Tuesday will be first of two meeting this season, with the second, coming next month in Nashville. The two teams split the two mid-week games last year, with the Blue Raiders getting the better of the No. 5-ranked Commodores in last year's home game, 7-4 on March 22nd.
MT is 4-0 in its last three mid-week games and 10-3 in their last 13 games.
The Blue Raider offense has put up video game numbers in their last five games, averaging 13.8 runs per game during win streak. MT has run-ruled its opponent three of its last five game. The offense has scored double digits in five consecutive games for the first time since 2002.
In the Blue Raiders last five games, they batted .449 as a team and slugging at a .711 clip with 16 doubles and 11 home runs.
All nine batters in the MT lineup are hitting .368 or better, eight are hitting .435 or better over the last five contests.
Sophomore slugger Drew Huff leads the way with a .529 batting average over the last five, including a career-high 4-of-4, five RBI performance Sunday against UAB. Newcomers Ryan Kemp and Aaron Antonini are right behind Huff with a .500 average.
Antonini had three RBI coming into the last five games, the freshman catcher has driven in eight Blue Raider runs in his last three starts.
The health of Aaron Aucker, Ryan Kemp, and Brad Jarreau have been key components to the Blue Raider recent success, as all three lead the MT lineup in batting average, all while missing a combined 45 games this season due to injury.
Sophomore Austin Dennis was another of many Blue Raiders who had a big week last week, adding to his team-leading 34 RBI, with eight in his last four games. Dennis ranks tied for 4th in C-USA in RBI and has already surpassed his 2016 total of 27 RBI.
Dennis was named C-USA Hitter of the Week earlier today. He is the first Blue Raider this season to receive the award.
After their big series against UAB, Middle Tennessee jumped from middle of the pack to tied for 2nd in the conference with a .299 team batting average. The team also ranks 2nd in the league in hits and 3rd in doubles
Riley Delgado leads the team with 53 hits and ranks 3rd in C-USA, to go along with a team-leading 12 doubles (9th in C-USA).
Key reliever Will Small still has yet to give up a run this season in 13-2/3 innings of work. The senior has played a much bigger role than expected this season, proving to be one of the most reliable pitchers out of the Blue Raider bullpen.
Freshman Grant Williams will get his fifth straight mid-week start on the mound. The Hendersonville native, is coming off of a short outing against Belmont. Williams will look to bounce back against Vanderbilt Tuesday night.
Vanderbilt will start RHP Chandler Day Tuesday. Day is 5-1, with a 3.44 ERA on the mound this season. Tuesday will be his eighth start of the year.
The Commodores are coming off a home series loss to No. 10 Florida this past weekend in Nashville. Vanderbilt has been struggling as of late, dropping four of its last five games, including dropping a 5-2 contest last Tuesday against Tennessee Tech.
The Dores lineup is led by Julian Infante, Will Toffey, and Jason Kendall, who are all batting .306 or better, and combining for 23 home runs and 95 RBI between the trio.
First pitch set for 6 p.m.
