MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team hosted in-state rival Belmont in a single game on Wednesday night, April 19. The Raiders scored two in the bottom of the first and held off the Bruins to take the 2-0 win. MT moves to 15-23 on the year while Belmont is now 29-14.
Summer Burgess got a leadoff walk in the Raiders first inning at the plate. Precious Birdsong followed with a double to left. Then, Morgan Harris laid down a squeeze play sacrifice bunt with Burgess able to use to her speed to get around the tag and score. Birdsong was able to score later in the inning on a ground out to second off the bat of Lexi Cushing.
Middle's only other hit of the game was also a double, which came in the bottom of the third off the bat of Harris. She was left stranded following a strikeout.
In the top of the fifth, Belmont threatened as Lexi Rouse hit a leadoff double to left center. The Raider defense was able to come up with the outs on a fly out to left, a pop up to short and a strikeout from Gretchen Greer in the circle.
The Raiders had a slurry of other great defensive plays in the game. Burgess dove and caught a ball in the webbing of her glove in the fourth. Samantha Vacko made a huge upwards leap to snag a ball in the sixth and Birdsong hustled for a few fly balls before laying out for one in right center field in the top of the seventh.
The Bruins got one other hit in the top of the seventh but Greer earned her third strikeout of the game to give the Raiders a 2-0 shutout win.
Greer is now 6-3 on the year with this game being her second complete game shutout of the season.
Birdsong was 1-for-3 with a run scored while Harris went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
