Championship Bracket
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee (10-14) enters the Conference USA Championship winning four of its last six matches and will look to continue the hot streak against North Texas (9-11) in the first round of the C-USA Women's Tennis Championship.
"We played a really tough schedule, and I don't think our record reflects how good we really are," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "The confidence is high coming off a win against Troy, as good as they were, and we played South Alabama tough too last time out."
The Mean Green are the hosts for this year's event, which was held in Murfreesboro last season. The two teams have met 12 times, with North Texas getting the upper hand in the last eight meetings to earn an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series over MT.
While the Blue Raiders enter play against the host team winning four of the last six, North Texas closed out its regular season on a high note as well, winning four of its last five matches, including a 4-2 triumph over UT-Arlington in the regular season finale. The Blue Raiders and Mean Green have two common opponents: Tulsa and Memphis. MT fell to Tulsa, 1-6, while also losing to Memphis, 2-4; North Texas lost to Tulsa, 2-4, but beat Memphis on April 1, 4-1.
MT enters the tournament with a 2-4 mark against conference foes, but the lone C-USA match of the season for North Texas was a loss to 4-seeded Old Dominion, 3-4. The Mean Green is led by Maria Kononova, who is currently ranked No. 76 by the ITA in singles, while also teaming up with Tamuna Kutubidze for a perfect 15-0 mark at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Despite the stellar play from Kononova, the Mean Green is .500 or worse at every other singles court. Likewise, the North Texas doubles strength doesn't go past No. 1 doubles, as they are 9-10 at No. 2 and 4-11 at No. 3 as a team this season.
As for the Blue Raiders, Marta Peris Herrero and Maria Josefina Zehnder have been phenomenal at the No. 3 doubles spot, winning their last nine matches.
"Our doubles lineup is set up for us to be successful," Ramsay said. "We're not always going to get the doubles point, we know that. We've really got to play to win this weekend."
In singles play, last year's C-USA Championship first round hero Costanza Magazzini closed out the regular season on a high note, winning her last four matches and leading the team in dual match singles wins with 12.
"Costanza's really stepped up," Ramsay added. "She holds herself to a very high standard on the court, and I feel like she's done a really great job playing at the No. 2 and 3 spots this year and getting some good, quality, tough wins. She's definitely playing her best tennis at the right time."
