NEW ORLEANS – Middle Tennessee women's tennis improved to 8-12 on the season after earning wins over New Orleans and Conference USA opponent LA Tech this weekend.
"I'm proud of the team for getting it done in tough conditions," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "I really like where we're at right now with four big matches left before the tournament. We are starting to play some good tennis, and I'm happy for them."
The Blue Raiders earned the first point of the weekend by winning doubles matches at No. 2 and 3. Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows won their 10th match as a doubles combo this season by blanking their opponents, 6-0. Marta Peris Herrero and Maria Josefina Zehnder clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 spot by taking down the Green Wave, 6-4.
In singles action, Tulane jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the match by winning in straight sets at No. 2, 3 and 4. Herrero forced a third set in her match by winning the second set, 6-3. Zehnder and Sarah Sediri were unable to finish their matches, which saw third sets.
Against New Orleans on Friday afternoon, Magazzini and Burrows again began the match with a win at No. 2 doubles, followed by a doubles-point clinching win by Herrero and Zehnder at No. 3.
The Privateers took matches at No. 1 and 2 singles to move ahead of the Blue Raiders before Magazzini and Luisa Zirilli won at No. 3 and 4, respectively, to allow MT to regain the lead.
Sediri came from behind after dropping her first set to win the match at No. 6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Blue Raiders their first win of the weekend.
In the weekend finale against C-USA's LA Tech, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead heading into singles by winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
"Doubles was close today, and I give LA Tech a lot of credit for coming back on two courts and getting that point," Ramsay added. "We decided as a team between doubles and singles that we were going to play with a lot of pride and not leave anything out there today, and we didn't."
Magazzini and Herrero quickly handed the lead to the Blue Raiders by winning in straight sets at No. 3 and 5, respectively. After LA Tech won at No. 2 in three sets, Zirilli cruised through her third set to win at No. 4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Zehnder clinched the Blue Raiders' eighth win of the season by taking the match at the top spot in the lineup, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
MT will return to the Adams Tennis Complex to face UAB on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a Sunday morning match against Southern Miss at 11.
