MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team travels to Charlotte for a crucial Conference USA weekend series, beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
The Blue Raiders currently sit at 6th in C-USA, while the 49ers are 4th, as only the top eight teams make the conference tournament. MT leads the all-time series against Charlotte 8-1, including winning the series last year at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Blue Raiders look to continue their recent success in C-USA games, winning their last four conference contests. MT has put up big numbers in those wins, scoring double digits in their last four conference games, which has not happened since the 2009 season.
Middle Tennessee has won 10 of its last 14 games, in big part due to the return of slugger Aaron Aucker. Aucker has homered five times in his last six outings. He currently leads the team in batting average (.381), home runs (7), and slugging percentage (.750).
Aucker is not the only Blue Raider in the lineup that can swing the bat. Five MT batters are hitting .307 or better, and all nine starts are hitting .274 or better this season.
Newcomer Ryan Kemp continues to impress this year, with nearly half of his hits this season being of the extra base variety. The second baseman has collected a double in each of his last three starts.
Murfreesboro native, Drew Huff, continues to be a difference maker for the Blue Raiders, hitting .307 on the year, to go along with 10 doubles and 27 RBI. Huff has especially made an impact on the mound, still not having allowed a run this season in 11 innings of work.
AJ Spencer getting his first Friday night start of the season. Spencer is coming off back-to-back season-long starts, going 6 innings against ODU (4/8) and 5-2/3 innings in the win against UAB (4/14). The sophomore is sporting a 3.86 ERA in his two conference starts. He has a 2.70 ERA over his last three starts.
Cody Puckett will get the Saturday Game One start of the doubleheader, as the senior has shown to be one of the more consistent pitchers on the Blue Raider staff. The southpaw is fourth on the team with a 3.86 ERA. The last two starts for Puckett on the mound have resulted in Blue Raider wins.
The Game Two starter of the doubleheader is TBA.
Charlotte will start RHP Colton Laws (1.21 ERA), LHP Josh Maciejewski (4.72 ERA), and RHP Zach Flanagan (2.65 ERA) for its weekend rotation.
The 49ers have been strong all season, defeating three Top 25 teams already this season. UNCC is currently on a four-game win streak, coming off a sweep of WKU last weekend and a mid-week win at #17 Wake Forest.
The 49er lineup is led by stud T.J. Nichting. Nichting is batting a team-high .396 this season while leading the team in RBI (31) and slugging percentage (.591) as well.
First pitch is set for Friday night at 5 p.m.
An audio and video broadcast will be available on CUSA.TV/RaiderVision and on the radio (92.3 FM WMOT 2 Friday and Saturday; 89.5 FM Sunday). Follow LIVE tweets on Twitter (@MT_Baseball).
