Softball Set to Host UAB

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team hosts UAB in a three game conference series this weekend. The series is scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday, April 22 beginning at noon with a single game to follow on Sunday, April 23 at noon as well. The Raiders lead the all-time series between the two sides, 5-3 with the last meeting over 10 years ago in March of 2004. That meeting was a doubleheader in Birmingham, which was a 1-1 split. UAB won the first game, 5-4 and the Raiders took game two, 6-5.
Middle comes into the weekend with a 15-23 record and a 4-11 mark in conference play. MT earned its 15th win by besting Belmont in the midweek game on Wednesday. The Raiders won in shutout fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and holding Belmont to just five hits through the seven innings. Gretchen Greer earned the win in the circle to move to 6-3 on the year. Precious Birdsong went 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run in the game.
Prior to that, in MT's last conference series, the Raiders took one game from FAU down in Boca Raton. All three games were decided by just one run with two of the contests going into the ninth inning. The Owls won both sides of the doubleheader, 5-4 and 3-2 but the Raiders came back to take the single game 2-1 to beat FAU for the first time since 2012.
Birdsong continues to pace the Raiders at the plate, with a .445 batting average, good for third-best in the conference. She also leads the team in on base percentage (.508), slugging percentage (.527), hits (49), triples (2), total bases (58) and stolen bases (18). In her senior season, Austyn Whaley leads the Raiders in RBI with 23.
Cori Jennings leads the Raider pitching squad with 131.1 innings of work this season for an 8-12 record and 2.35 ERA. She has struck out 85 on the year. Coming off her second complete game shutout, Greer is now 6-3 on the year. She has a 2.96 ERA and has struck out 44 in 54.1 innings this season.
UAB enters the weekend with a similar record at 16-28, 7-8. The Blazers played two midweek games, getting a win over Samford, 4-3, and then falling to No. 9 Washington, 6-0. UAB is also coming off a conference series win, taking two of three from North Texas by scores of 3-2, 2-1 and 0-1.
As a team, the Blazers are hitting at the bottom of the conference with .221. Analyse Petree leads the team in the category, with a .283. She also leads the Blazers in doubles (7) and slugging percentage (.425). Madison Millsaps is hitting .210 on the year while pacing the team in RBI with 17 to go with five home runs. Joanna Fallen also has five home runs this season to go with 15 RBI.
Claire Blount has seen the majority of the time in the circle for UAB with 132 innings. She comes into the series with a 2.81 ERA and 7-9 record with 111 strikeouts. Cara Goodwin has pitched 91 innings this year. She is 4-11 with a 3.85 ERA and 70 strikeouts.
