AUBURN, Ala. — Jacob Choge, Eliud Rutto and Agnes Abu continued their torrid streak on the track by setting three school records for the second straight week on day one of the War Eagle Invitational.
Choge set the school record in the 5000-meter run last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, and followed that performance with a new school-best time. The freshman grabbed first place with a time of 13:39.90 to break teammate Sampson Laari's school record set last season and created a new Hutsell-Rosen Track record. Choge's time currently ranks fifth in the country.
Rutto took first place in the men's 1500-meter run and broke a 40-year-old record with a time of 3:41.38. The senior, who was named the C-USA Male Track Athlete of the Week earlier in the week, currently stands at No. 8 nationally.
Abu, who was tabbed the league's Female Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, clocked a 4:17.75 to place second in the women's 1500-meter run. Abu broke Zamzam Sangua's record in the 800-meter run last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, and topped Sangua's 2009 1500-meter mark Friday night by 10 seconds. The senior's time currently ranks among the top 25 in NCAA.
Phillip Smith jump started the Blue Raiders' success with a leap of 49-01.75 in the men's triple jump. Smith finished the event with the best mark for a collegian.
The Blue Raiders cap the weekend on the Plains Saturday with the field events beginning at 11:30 a.m., while the track events will start at noon.
