Blue Raiders drop two games saturday
4/22/2017 8:50:00 PM | Baseball
MT fell 7-4 and 12-5 Saturday against Charlotte
"It was a tough weekend for us obviously," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "We were in all three games, we just couldn't make the timely plays close out the game. Charlotte is a great team, but we have to find ways to win those games."
MT out-hit Charlotte in both games, but did not seem to get the timely hits to drive in enough runs. The bullpen could not hold the Charlotte offense.
Brad Jarreau and Aaron Aucker finished with six hits apiece on the day.
GAME ONE
Blue Raiders struck first, putting up a three-spot in to start the game. Jarreau started things off with a single through the left side. Second baseman Ryan Kemp drew a walk, followed by a double steal executed perfectly advancing the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Aucker stepped to the plate and roped a two-RBI double to right field.
MT was not done in the inning, using a sac fly from Kaleb King to score Aucker from 3rd. Middle Tennessee led 3-0 after the first half of the inning.
Charlotte responded with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first. MT led 3-2 after the first inning.
The 49ers took the lead in the 2nd collecting a three run inning of their own. Charlotte scored a crucial run on a wild pitch giving them the 5-3 lead.
The Blue Raiders battled back in the top of the 3rd, when Austin Dennis used another sac fly to score Kemp from 3rd.
MT held the powerful Charlotte offense scoreless for the next five innings. 49ers struck again in the 8th plating two insurance runs and pushing the lead to 7-4.
The Blue Raiders missed a decent amount of opportunities to score with runners in scoring position.
Both Jarreau and Aucker finished with three hits apiece in the contest.
GAME TWO
Charlotte used a three-run 1st inning of its own to start off the game.
MT bounced back as Aucker continued his hot-hitting, roping a single in the second inning, starting the Blue Raider attack. Dennis followed with a single of his own advancing Aucker to third. On the next play, King used another sac fly to score Aucker.
The Blue Raiders answered in the 3rd, with back-to-back singles from Riley Delgado and Brad Jarreau. Kemp used a groundout to score Delgado from 3rd. It was Aucker again who came up with a big hit, ripping an RBI-single to right field, scoring Jarreau from 2nd.
The game was all tied up after three innings.
Middle Tennessee started another rally in the 5th when Jarreau led off the inning with a single. Kemp followed him up with a walk. Aucker flew out to right field advancing Kemp and Jarreau to 2nd and 3rd with one out.
The Blue Raiders used another sac fly to score a run with Dennis flying out to right field and scoring Jarreau. On the next play, King ripped an RBI-single to center scoring Kemp.
MT led 5-3 going to the home-half of the 5th.
Charlotte battled back in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on an RBI-double down the left field line.
The Blue Raiders held the 5-4 lead until the bottom of the 7th when Charlotte used an eight-run inning to put the game well out of reach.
MT will be back in action Tuesday at Tennessee Tech.
