Raiders Pick Up Late NIght 3-1 Win Over UAB

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team weathered an eight and half hour weather delay on Saturday, April 22 that turned an afternoon doubleheader into just a single night game. The Raiders were able to make the most of the situation and pick up a 3-1 win over conference foe, UAB. Middle moves to 16-23, 5-11 while UAB is now 16-29, 7-9.
The Raiders got on the board first, picking up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Summer Burgess reached on a walk and made her way to third via a Precious Birdsong bloop single to left center and a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Harris. Then Austyn Whaley laid down a sacrifice bunt in the squeeze situation that allowed Burgess to give MT the 1-0 lead.
The Raiders added a two-run cushion in the bottom of the third. Burgess reached first again to lead off the inning, this time on a single to the shortstop. She moved to second on Birdsong's second hit of the game, a rocket down the left field line. Harris then followed suit by sending a single just past the outstretched glove of the shortstop to score Burgess. Recording her second RBI of the night, Whaley then hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield that allowed Birdsong to tag up and make it 3-0.
In the top of the fifth the Blazers were able to take advantage of two Raider throwing errors to get on the board. Following the miscues, UAB had runners on the corners with no outs. However, MT was able to pull a double play to keep the Blazers off the scoreboard for the time being. A ground out to Cori Jennings in the circle, followed by a throw from Lexi Cushing to Harris at the plate put two away.
Amy Waters then came up and hit a RBI double to centerfield to make the score 3-1, bringing home pinch runner, Katelyn Prater from second base.
The Blazers threatened again to get more runs across in the top of the seventh. A hit by pitch followed by a walk gave the Blazers a pair of base runners. The duo moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt with just one out. However, the Raider defense came up big as Samantha Vacko snagged a line drive and Jennings recorded her fourth strikeout of the game for the 3-1 win.
Jennings picked up her 16th complete game of the year and her ninth win in the circle for MT to move to 9-12 on the year. She allowed just two hits in the game and zero earned runs.
Burgess and Birdsong both went 2-for-2 in the game with Burgess scoring twice and Birdsong scoring once. Whaley had two RBI while Harris had the other one.
UAB and MT return to the field tomorrow, Sunday April 23 for the series deciding doubleheader. Game one will get underway at 12pm. With weather again in the forecast, stay tuned on Twitter to @MT_Softball for updates.
