Raiders in 4th after round one of C-USA Championship

Byrd shoots 69 to lead MT
ROUND ONE RESULTS
TEXARKANA, AR – The Middle Tennessee men's golf team opened the Conference USA Championship Sunday with a 294 total in round one of stroke play at the Texarkana CC (par 72, 6,969 yards). The Blue Raiders are in fourth place in the 13-team field.
The tournament will have three rounds of stroke play, and then the top four teams will advance to match play on Tuesday. The team champion after match play will earn C-USA's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional.
North Texas grabbed the day one lead with a 5-under total of 293 while UTEP was second at 1-under par. Charlotte was at 1-over and in third place.
Sophomore Marcus Byrd led the Blue Raiders in round one with an impressive 3-under par 69. Byrd, who had four birdies on the day, had a spotless scorecard until his last hole where he suffered a body. Byrd, who leads the field in par 5 scoring at 4-under, is in fourth place overall and two shots back of leader Seth Gandy (Charlotte).
Freshman Chip Thomas had a solid day with a 2-over par 74. Thomas had two birdies on his round and is tied for 23rd overall.
Senior Joey Savoie carded a 75 and is tied for 27th. The Quebec, Canada native had three birdies.
Junior Hoyeong Kim, who finished 12th in last year's event, turned in a 76 and is tied for 35th. Kim had five birdies on his round and is tied for second in the field.
Freshman Ilari Saulo struggled in his first C-USA Championship round by registering a 79. Saulo is tied for 50th after putting up two birdies.
The Blue Raiders, who share the tournament lead in par 5 scoring at 8-under, will begin second round action Monday morning and will play the third round in the afternoon. Due to impending weather on Wednesday, the tournament is playing 36 holes Monday and match play on Tuesday..
