MT out-hit the No. 1 Hitting Team in the Nation
The Blue Raiders (20-21) belted nine extra base hits to dominate the Golden Eagles (30-13) who came into tonight's game, as the number one team in the nation in total hits this season.
MT used four home runs from Brad Jarreau, Manuel Lopez, Austin Dennis, and Aaron Aucker to saddle TTU with only its fourth home loss of the year.
"Our bats were on tonight, there's no doubt about that," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "It was a big game for us offensively and confidence wise, hopefully we can carry it into the weekend against a very good Southern Miss team."
The Blue Raiders jumped to a big start scoring three runs in the first frame. Riley Delgado and Jarreau led things off with back-to-back singles. Second baseman Ryan Kemp drew the walk on the next play to load the bases for Aaron Aucker.
Aucker who is batting .412 on the year, delivered with a double to the wall in center field, scoring Delgado and Jarreau. On the next play, Dennis used a sac fly to score Kemp, and put the Blue Raiders up 3-0.
Tennessee Tech answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of its own. The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 3rd with a two-run homer to right field, 4-3.
Lopez earned his first career start in left field and proved to be a big difference, plating the tying run in the 4th with an RBI-double to right center, scoring senior Kaleb King who started off the inning with a two-bagger of his own.
In the fourth, Jarreau blasted a three-run homer gave the Blue Raiders the 7-4 lead.
MT added another run in the 5th when King used a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing the score to 8-4.
Tech battled back in the bottom of the 5th, scoring two runs, pulling within two runs, 8-6.
The Middle Tennessee offense only got stronger as the game went on, when Kemp slapped a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line. The next at-bat, Aucker chopped an RBI-single through the left side scoring Kemp, giving the Blue Raiders the 11-6 lead.
Lopez crushed his second career home run in the 7th, part of his 2-for-5 three RBI night, putting MT up 13-6.
Dennis kept the offensive onslaught going in the 8th, belting a three-run home run, giving the Blue Raiders the 16-6 lead.
???????Aucker added insult to injury in the 9th, crushing his team-leading eighth home run to left field with two outs.
Middle Tennessee scored in six straight innings, from the 4th to the 9th inning, notching 15 runs during the stretch.
Will Small (4-0) continues his career year, picking up his fourth win of the season, after only earning two wins in his first three years as a Blue Raider. The senior threw two innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and striking out one in a relief effort.
Golden Eagle starter Nick Osborne (2-1) was tabbed with his first loss of the season.
Delgado 3-of-4 with a pair of runs and a double.
Aucker extended his hitting streak to 13 games, going 3-of-5 with a career-high five RBI.
"Aucker has been huge for us lately," said McGuire. " Having him back and healthy in our lineup has been crucial to our success."
MT will be back home this weekend to take on No. 25 Southern Miss for a three-game Conference USA series in Murfreesboro. First pitch set for 6 p.m. Friday night.
