Burris, Gotcher and Long earn C-USA honors
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Following a second-place finish at the Conference USA Championship in Fort Myers, Fla., last week, Middle Tennessee's top three members of the women's golf team have been named to All-Conference USA Teams as announced by the league office Wednesday.
In a vote by the league's 11 head coaches, Blue Raider sophomore Jenna Burris was selected to the All-C-USA Second Team while senior Samantha Gotcher and sophomore Hanley Long were selected to the Third Team. All three are making repeat appearances as all-conference selections, combining for one First Team honor and two Second Team honors a season ago.
"Any time you can get three girls on the all-conference team it is a big honor because it represents what we've done as a group this season," head coach Chris Adams said.
Middle Tennessee was one of just three teams to have three players represented on the 2017 all-league teams, joining Southern Miss and UTSA, while no team had four or more selections.
"Overall, the conference is a lot deeper this year from top to bottom, so to be one of just three teams to get three representatives is great recognition for our team and those three girls," Adams added.
Burris capped off her sophomore campaign with a dominant 7-under par performance to capture the 2017 Conference USA individual title. The Manchester, Tenn., native logged a 75.6 stroke average on the year and logged four of her five Top 20 finishes in the spring when she averaged 73 strokes per round.
Gotcher averaged 75.0 strokes per round during her senior season at MT, finishing her career with a third consecutive Top 20 showing at the Conference USA Championship after twice finishing in the Top Five as a sophomore and junior. The Clarksville, Tenn., native notched four Top 20 finishes this season and led the Blue Raiders in stroke average in her final campaign.
Long, another Clarksville native, joins Burris in making her second all-conference appearance in just two seasons of collegiate golf. The sophomore compiled a 75.3 stroke average on the year and logged her second Top 10 finish at the Conference USA Championship in as many seasons last week.
"Maybe it was a down year for us by rankings as the No. 5 seed going into the conference tournament, but I'm very proud of their efforts to help us finish second this year," Adams said. "I think that we've proven that we belong at the top of this league every year and we expect to be back there next year."
