MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will welcome No. 25 Southern Miss for a three-game Conference USA series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday night at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Blue Raiders will look to carry their momentum from their 18-7 win over Tennessee Tech Tuesday night in Cookeville.
The weekend series is crucial for MT's C-USA tournament chances, as the Blue Raiders are currently on the outside looking in, sitting at ninth in the conference, while only the top eight teams make it to the tournament in Biloxi, Miss.
Six batters in the MT lineup are hitting .306 or better.
Designated hitter Aaron Aucker continues his amazing offensive display, as the redshirt junior is batting an unheard of .412 this season. Aucker raked his eighth homer of the year Tuesday night, the Knoxville native has hit six homers in his last 10 games. He is currently on a 13-game hit streak, the longest of any Blue Raider this season.
Aucker is batting .489 in his 12 games since returning from his hamstring injury. He leads the team in batting average, home runs, and slugging percentage in just 27 games.
Seniors Brad Jarreau and Riley Delgado have impressed in their final season in a Blue Raider jersey, hitting .353 and .335 respectively. Delgado ranks fourth in C-USA with 60 hits this year.
Newcomer Ryan Kemp continues to impress, hitting .333 on the season. Kemp is coming off a career-high four runs against Tennessee Tech.
Sophomores Austin Dennis and Drew Huff have been hot from the plate lately, batting .400 and .313 apiece in their last four contests.
Middle Tennessee will need excellent pitching this weekend to stop the highly-touted Southern Miss offense. The Golden Eagles come into the series at the top of the conference in multiple offensive categories.
The weekend rotation will stay the same for the second straight week, with AJ Spencer getting his second Friday night start of the season.
Cody Puckett will get the Saturday start, as the senior has shown to be one of the more consistent pitchers on the Blue Raider staff. The southpaw is fourth on the team with a 4.54 ERA. The lefty has the best ERA amongst the weekend rotation.
Sunday is Jake Wyrick, the lefty has struggled during C-USA play. Wyrick was sporting a sub 2.00 ERA for most of the non-conference season. He leads the team in strikeouts with 53.
Southern Miss ranks first in the conference in batting average, runs, hits, home runs, slugging percentage, walks, and stolen bases. All nine hitters in USM's offense are hitting .297 or better.
The Golden Eagles have been strong all season, however, they are coming off their first C-USA series loss, dropping two of three last weekend against ODU.
USM will start LHP Kirk McCarty, RHP Taylor Braley and TBA in its weekend rotation.
First pitch is set for Friday night at 6 p.m.
An audio and video broadcast will be available on CUSA.TV/RaiderVision and on the radio (92.3 FM WMOT 2 Friday; 89.5 FM Saturday and Sunday). Follow LIVE tweets on Twitter (@MT_Baseball).
