Pair of Blue Raiders honored by C-USA
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After leading their team in singles and doubles wins in the spring season, Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows were named to Conference USA's All-Conference Singles list today.
Magazzini posted a 12-9 mark in the dual match season, including four wins at No. 2, a 6-3 record at No. 3, and an unblemished 2-0 record on court four. The sophomore from Pistoia, Italy, closed the season with six wins in her last eight matches that ended in a decision. Nine of her 12 wins came in straight sets, while she also had a 3-2 mark in matches that saw a third set.
"Costanza was a leader. She had the most wins in the fall, and she really set the tone for the team," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "She played the best tennis in the fall, and it carried over. Her confidence got a little low in the middle of the year, but she bounced back at the end of the year. She led our team in a lot of different areas but especially on the court."
As a freshman, Burrows also helped to anchor the middle of the MT lineup with a record of 11-11, winning three matches on court two, posting a 7-4 mark at No. 3, and winning her only match at No. 4. The West Yorkshire, England, native boasts a win over currently-ranked No. 34 Tulsa in a match-tiebreak, and took a win in the first round of the C-USA Championship over host team North Texas after dropping the first set.
"Lidia has an interesting game. She can really hurt you if you're not offensive and aggressive," Ramsay added. "She's willing to stay out there, and she did a really good job racking up a ton of wins playing at a really tough spot. I couldn't be happier with her performance this year."
As a doubles combo, Magazzini and Burrows were 14-6 on the season, with eight wins at No. 2 to go with a 6-1 mark at No. 3. The duo claimed 10 wins in their first 11 matches of the season before closing out the season against North Texas with a commanding 6-2 victory.
"We know they're a good team together, and we know we can depend on them," Ramsay said of the duo. "They had a great year and won a lot of matches at No. 3 doubles, and I'm happy for them that they had such a successful year."
After a 10-15 record this season with a young squad and a narrow defeat in the first round of the C-USA Championship, Magazzini and Burrows will look to lead their team in singles and doubles again next season.
