Puckett strikeouts 10
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's Cody Puckett and Southern Miss' Taylor Braley engaged in a strong pitcher's duel as the two teams battled in the second contest of a three-game series at Reese Smith Jr. Field Saturday.
Puckett provided his best start of the season but it wasn't enough as the Blue Raiders (20-23, 7-13) dropped a grueling 4-3 decision to the No. 25-ranked Golden Eagles (33-12, 15-5).
Puckett worked seven innings, scattered six hits, tied his career high with 10 strikeouts and walked just one batter. He allowed four runs, three earned before giving way to freshman Devin Conn in the eighth. Puckett retired 12 straight Southern Miss hitters during one stretch between the fourth and seventh innings.
Braley worked seven innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs, all earned for Southern Miss.
"I thought this was the best Cody has pitched this season," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "He was in control. He gave up a wind-blown, two-run home run in the first that just scrapped over the top of the wall. Other than that, he was pretty strong out there."
Brad Jarreau led Middle Tennessee's 11-hit attack with a 3-for-5 performance, which included one run and one RBI. Ryan Kemp stayed hot and connected for his sixth home run. Kemp was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Aaron Aucker extended his hitting streak to 15 games and he has reached base safely in 25 straight. Aucker was 2-for-5. Austin Dennis also turned in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. The No. 2 through 5 hitters (Jarreau, Kemp, Aucker and Dennis, respectively) were a combined 9-for-18 with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run.
Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Braley helped his cause with a two-run home run.
Middle Tennessee got one run back in the bottom of the second when Jarreau's single scored Aaron Antonini, who had reached on a leadoff single.
Southern Miss scored two runs in the top of the third when the Blue Raiders were guilty of three errors to go on top 4-1.
The Blue Raiders cut the deficit to 4-3 when Kemp delivered a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh. Middle Tennessee had plenty of opportunities. The Blue Raiders had a runner at third with none out in the third and didn't score. They had the tying run at third with out in the eighth and didn't score.
Middle Tennessee will look to salvage the final game of the series on Murfreesboro Little League Day. First pitch is 1 p.m.
