MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee looks to continue its recent success, when it travels to Knoxville to take on Tennessee Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
The Blue Raiders have impressed lately, winning four of their last five games.
Tuesday's game will account for the 55th time the two programs have met. Tennessee swept the series in 2016, winning at Reese Smith Jr. Field 4-2, and then again in Knoxville 9-2. The Vols lead the overall series 34-20.
Sophomore Austin Dennis is playing multiple roles on this Blue Raider team, more roles than were expected coming into the season. Dennis has been one of the most reliable pitchers out of the Blue Raider bullpen. Dennis pitched in high school and has made six appearances this year, including earning his first career win on the mound in relief in Game One of the doubleheader at Marshall this past weekend. He is sporting a 3.60 ERA, 1-0 record, and two saves.
Dennis dominated Marshall Saturday, getting the win on the mound, going 4-of-8 from the plate, one HR, one triple, two doubles, and five RBI. The Rockledge, Fla., native leads the team with 24 RBI, picking up six in the Marshall series.
Another sophomore, Blake Benefield, has been hot as of late, batting .412 over his last five games. Newcomer Ryan Kemp's bat is hot as well, hitting .368 over his last five, including a home run and two doubles.
The Blue Raiders recent success can partially be attributed to Brad Jarreau's return from injury. The senior center fielder is batting .300, to go along with two homers and five RBI since coming back from a broken hand suffered opening weekend.
MT will start freshman Grant Williams on the mound Tuesday. Williams is coming off of another solid start last week at Belmont, throwing a career-high 5-2/3 innings of work, allowing four runs, on five hits and striking out two. Williams is sporting a 4.50 ERA in his three starts, contrary to his overall 7.08 ERA on the season.
UT will start LHP Zach Warren on the mound Tuesday afternoon. Warren is 2-2 on the year in six starts, compiling a 5.52 ERA in 29-1/3 innings of work.
An audio stream will be available on cusa.tv/raidervision and on the radio (92.3 WMOT 2). Follow live tweets on Twitter (@MT_Baseball).
