MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team dropped the series finale to No. 25 Marshall, 2-0, on senior day. Megan Chocallo pitched what Head Coach Jeff Breeden called "the best game of her career," in the circle. She allowed just two runs on six hits in the complete game. MT falls to 18-26, 5-14 while the Thundering Herd improve to 38-7, 18-3.
Prior to the game, MT honored its four senior, Austyn Whaley, Lauren Riddell, Lauren Payne and Chocallo.
Box Score
The Raiders held the Herd scoreless in the first three innings for the first time in the series.
Morgan Zerkle put Marshall on the board in the top of the fourth. A solo home run over the wall in right field gave the Herd a 1-0 lead.
The Herd added to their lead in the top of the sixth, as they loaded the bases on a single to center, a walk and an infield single back to the pitcher. Then, Shaelynn Braxton hit a drive to third base that made it 2-0 in favor of Marshall. The Raiders were able to get out of the jam, as Whaley, at second, fielded two ground balls to keep the Herd's inning at just one run.
The Raiders made a game of it in the bottom of the seventh, keeping Marshall on their heels until the very end. Down by two, Morgan Harris got a leadoff walk. Then with two outs, Kaylyn Slatter came in as a pinch hitter and sent a bloop single to right field, just short of the diving right fielder.
With runners on the corners and the winning run at the plate, Lexi Cushing came in as a pinch hitter. Instead, Marshall pitcher, Jordan Dixon, recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to give the Herd the 2-0 win.
Chocallo took the loss, giving up just six hits to one of the top offense's in the country and striking out two.
The Raider offense was held to just two hits with Harris and Slatter recording them.
Middle returns to the Blue Raider Softball Field for two final games at home this season. The Raiders host UAB in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday, May 3 at 3pm.
