MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team has just one game on their slate for the week and that is a midweek matchup with Belmont tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5. The game will be played in Nashville at Rose Park with first pitch scheduled for 5pm.
The two sides are familiar foes having faced each other over 30 times including twice a season since 2013. The Blue Raiders lead the all-time series 24-5 over the Bruins.
Last season, the Raiders and Bruins split the two contests with MT winning 11-6 in the first meeting and Belmont taking the second game of the series, 6-5.
In the first game of the series in which MT won 11-6 in Nashville, the Raiders scored in five of the seven innings including a big five run sixth inning. Precious Birdsong was 3-for-4 with four stolen bases, Morgan Harris went 2-for-5 and Austyn Whaley recorded two RBI on a double. In the circle, Pattie Ruth Taylor got the win while for Belmont Ashley Johnson took the loss.
In the second game the Bruins got out to an early lead and never relinquished despite the Raiders cutting the lead to just one run with a three run fifth inning. Belmont won, 6-5 in Murfreesboro. Chelsey Deloney, Jess Andree and Jordan Spicer all hit home runs in the contest for the Bruins. Ashley Johnson picked up the win in the circle with Megan Chocallo taking the loss for Middle.
The Blue Raiders come into this year's matchup with Belmont riding the momentum of the first conference series win of the season last weekend. MT improved to 12-19, 3-9 by taking the series 2-1 at LA Tech. The Lady Techsters won the first game of the series, 4-0, but the Raiders won the other two in comeback fashion, 3-1 and 9-8, to take the series.
Kaylyn Slatter hit a blistering .571 in the series (4-for-7) with three RBI, a double and her first career home run. She picked up the RBI to tie the rubber match game and send it to extra innings. Summer Burgess was 6-for-12 and scored twice while Birdsong went 4-for-9 with three walks, and hit a home run, a two-run shot over the right field fence in game three of the series. Deja Portillo went 3-for-8 with an RBI, hitting the game winning single in game two of the weekend.
Birdsong's season batting average is now up to .412, one of just seven players in C-USA hitting above .400. She is also fifth best in the conference in on-base percentage (.490), and 11th in stolen bases (15).
Last weekend in the circle for the Raiders, Cori Jennings and Gretchen Greer each had two stellar outings. Jennings picked up her 12th complete game, allowing just four hits in her sixth win of the year. Her season ERA is now 2.63 with a team-leading 61 strikeouts. Greer came into pitch in relief with the bases loaded in the series-deciding game. She had a lights out performance, striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced including the first three in a row. She improved to 5-2 on the year and now has a 3.41 ERA.
Belmont comes into the contest with a 26-9 overall record with a 3-3 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Bruins split their weekend with Eastern Kentucky last weekend, winning the first 7-0 and falling in the second game, 14-3.
Kayla Wells leads the team at the plate with a .388 batting average while Deloney has shown to be the Bruins' biggest bat. She has 12 home runs already this year to go with 28 RBI. Lexi Rouse also has 28 RBI on the season to go with eight doubles, a triple and four home runs.
