NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team traveled to Nashville for a single game against in-state rival Belmont. Under very windy conditions, the Raiders fell 6-1 to the Bruins. MT moves to 12-20, 3-9 and Belmont improves to 27-9, 3-3.
The Bruins jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They scored one run on a single up the middle from Bailey Sims following a walk and an error. The error allowed the inning to extend and an extra at bat gave Belmont the lead.
The Raiders had a chance to grab a couple of runs in the top of the fourth. MT got the bases on two walks and a single down the first base line from Kaylyn Slatter. However, a fly out to left field stranded all three runners.
Belmont added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Another error on the Raiders put a runner aboard and then two singles with the second off the bat of Jordan Spicer made it 2-0. A shallow single to right loaded the bases and two walks doubled the score pushing two across. Then, a hard hit ball to second base from Sims made it 6-0 in favor of the Bruins.
Middle went for the comeback in the top of the seventh. Summer Burgess led off by reaching on an error and came around to score on an RBI single to right center field from Precious Birdsong. The rally would end at one as two strikeouts ended the Raiders' chance.
Cori Jennings took the loss in the circle, moving to 6-11 on the year. She struck out three.
Birdsong and Slatter each went 2-for-3 in the game with Birdsong recording the lone RBI. Keely McGee and Lexi Cushing picked up the Raiders' other two hits in the game.
MT has the weekend off and returns to action in Clarksville, Tenn. on Tuesday, April 11 to take on Austin Peay.
