Blue Raiders Drop 5 Bombs In Rout of ODU
4/9/2017 4:16:00 PM | Baseball
The 5 homers was the first in a game for MT since 2008
It marked the first time Middle Tennessee (15-17, 4-8) had five or more home runs in a game since the 2008 Blue Raiders hit six against UALR.
Aaron Aucker's return to the lineup from injury this weekend ignited the lineup. Aucker was 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored Sunday, but his bat was not the most potent in the lineup Sunday.
Ryan Kemp continued his torrid pace by going 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and three runs scores. He was a triple away from the cycle. His riveting performance completed a spectacular 9-for-12 weekend that included two home runs, three doubles, six runs scored and four RBI.
Every Blue Raider who played had at least one hit. Seven Blue Raiders supplied multi-hit games, led by Kemp's four-hit day. Riley Delgado was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Brad Jarreau was 2-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBI. Blake Benefield (2-for-4, double, two RBI, two runs), Kaleb King (2-for-4) and Aaron Antonini (2-for-5, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit games as part of Middle Tennessee's 19-hit attack.
"It was good to come out today and get this win," Middle Tennessee skipper Jim McGuire said. "We hit up and down the lineup today. We did a good job of taking pitches the other way. When we do that and do not try to pull everything, we have a chance to drive balls and have good results. Our approach at the plate was sound today."
Reid Clements (2-0) earned the win with two innings of two-hit relief in his first outing since going on the disabled list earlier in the season. Clements pitched in relief of Cody Puckett, who scattered seven hits in four innings.
"We are starting to get healthy and getting some guys back and that is huge," McGuire said. "You saw the impact this weekend with Aucker and Clements providing help for us."
Five straight Blue Raiders reached base to start the game against Old Dominion lefty John Wilson, who entered the game with a 5-0 mark and 2.97 ERA. Middle Tennessee led 4-0 by the time the first out was recorded, compliments of two first-inning round trippers.
Jarreau's fourth home run in eight games, a two-run circuit clout to left, followed a Delgado leadoff single to stake the Blue Raiders to a 2-0 lead. After Dennis reached, Aucker absolutely obliterated a Wilson offering, lifting it into orbit for a mammoth two-run, opposite-field jolt. The only thing stopping the baseball was the top of the Reese Smith Jr. Field scoreboard some 375 feet away in right center field.
Benefield capped the first-inning scoring with a single to plate Kemp and provide a comfortable 5-0 cushion after the first inning.
Kemp's two-out double scored Dennis, who had singled, to push the advantage to 6-0 in the second.
The Monarchs (24-9, 9-3) scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to pull to within 6-4, but Kemp continued his torrid pace in the bottom of the fourth. Aucker drew a free pass to bring Kemp to the plate with one out. The second baseman delivered his second extra-base hit of the game and second home run of the series with an opposite-field blast to right, staking Middle Tennessee to an 8-4 advantage.
The Blue Raiders pushed the lead to 9-4 when Dennis' single up the middle scored Jarreau, who had doubled off the centerfield fence, and then Aucker struck once again.
The redshirt junior from Knoxville, Tenn., belted his second home run of the game when he blasted a pitch more than 400 feet over the fence in center. Aucker's first career multi-home run game staked the Blue Raiders to an 11-4 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. It ignited an electrifying seven-run inning and, by the time the dust had settled, Middle Tennessee secured a 15-4 lead.
Old Dominion was able to score two more runs, but Delgado's third home run of the season, was a two-run shot that provided a 17-6 advantage and the 10-run mercy rule after seven on get-away day.
Blue Raiders are back in action for the fourth game of the eight-game home stand Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Belmont. First pitch set for 6 p.m.
