Blue Raiders Come Up Short Friday

MT fell to Rice 5-3
HOUSTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee battled, but came up short against Rice 5-3 Friday night at Reckling Park.
The Blue Raiders (21-28, 7-18) rallied from three down to tie the game in the seventh. However, the Owls (23-27, 13-12) had the answer, retaking the lead in the bottom of the frame.
"We pitched a lot better this game, and I thought that we really competed," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "(Carson) Lester was really good for us tonight, but at the end of the day, their pitchers outdueled ours."
Rice struck first with a solo homer in the second inning.
The Owls added two crucial runs in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 3-0.
The Blue Raiders scored a run in the sixth after Brad Jarreau and Ryan Kemp ripped back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners with one out. Later in the inning, Jarreau scored on a passed ball, making it 3-1.
MT answered again in the seventh, when Drew Huff and Blake Benefield provided a spark, knocking back-to-back base hits with one out. Senior catcher Chaz Vesser plated Huff with an RBI-groundout, 3-2. Another senior,
Riley Delgado came up with a huge RBI-single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3 heading to the home-half.
Rice responded with a run of its own after a leadoff triple, the Owls retook the lead 4-3.
The Owls added an insurance run in the eighth, with a solo home run.
Middle Tennessee starter Carson Lester started for the first time since Mar. 11. The Murfreesboro native had a solid outing, throwing a career-high 4-2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out two.
MT Reliever Tyler Hasper (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
Rice reliever Glenn Otto (4-4) earned the win, throwing 2-1/3 innings of work.
Delgado finished 2-of-4 in the game.
Game two set for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
