Choge advances to NCAA Championships

Blue Raiders enjoy successful day at NCAA Regionals
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Despite a rain-soaked opening day from the NCAA East Regional, four Blue Raiders advanced to the quarterfinal round in Lexington, while Jacob Choge capped the day qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Choge completed the first day by clocking a 29:58.13 in the men's 10000-meter run for a fifth-place finish to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. next month.
Eliud Rutto qualified for the quarterfinals in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.87, and will return to the track on Friday for a shot to qualify for nationals.
On the women's side, Abike Egbeniyi, Agnes Abu and Janet Amponsah qualified for the next round in the East Regional after posting top-20 finishes in their respective events.
Egbeniyi and Abu finished fifth and sixth in the 800-meter run with times of 2:06.63 and 2:06.68, respectively, while Amponsah finished 20th with a time of 11.53 in the 100-meter dash.
Seven Blue Raiders are set to appear on the track Friday, with Elizabeth Dadzie starting the day in the 100-meter hurdles. Amponsah, Egbeniyi and Abu seek to build on their day one success in the 100-meter dash and 800-meter quarterfinals, respectively. Amponsah will also seek to qualify for the women's 200-meter dash in the first round.
For the men, Rutto will run in the 800-meter quarterfinals. Tahir Walsh will compete in the 200-meter first round, and Geoffry Cheruiyot will make his first appearance on the track for the weekend in the 3000-meter Steeplechase.
