Blue Raiders fell 10-9 Sunday
The Blue Raiders (20-27, 7-17) fell behind 8-3 early on in the game, before battling back to take the lead in the seventh. The Roadrunners (25-21, 13-11) responded in the eighth with two runs of their own to seal the game.
"I'm proud of the way our guys fought," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "We could've easily rolled over with the way things are going lately, but we got back into the game and battled to the end."
MT had a chance in the ninth, to take back the lead after loading the bases with two outs. A groundout ended the Blue Raider comeback attempt.
The Roadrunners struck first again, plating two runs in the first with one swing of the bat.
MT battled back in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Austin Dennis to get on the board.
The Blue Raiders struck again in the fifth, with Drew Huff roping a leadoff double to left field. Blake Benefield reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, scoring Huff.
Ryan Kemp continued his hot-hitting with an RBI-single up the middle giving MT the 3-2 lead.
The lead was short lived, with the Roadrunners notching a six-spot in the bottom of the fifth.
The Blue Raiders did not go down easy, after going on a hitting spree in the sixth. Senior Kaleb King began the hitting barrage with a double to left. After advancing on a wild pitch, Huff stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI-single to center scoring King.
After a pitching change, Benefield, who had not homered since Feb. 24, crushed a two-run shot to left field, lifting the Raiders back into the game. The offense was not finished in the inning, with Delgado and Vesser ripping back-to-back singles.
Jarreau used a sacrifice fly to left to score Vesser and pull MT within a run, 8-7.
Blue Raiders continued their momentum in the seventh with Dennis getting on base with a leadoff walk, and then stealing second. King followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
Huff grounding into a double play tied the game up at 8-8. The Blue Raiders wanted more, as Benefield pulled a two-out double down the left field line. Vesser followed with single to center and Benefield diving under the tag to take the 9-8 advantage.
UTSA tied the game up in the eighth with a RBI-double to left center and a two-out balk gave the Roadrunners the 10-9 lead.
Kemp tied a career high, going 4-of-5 in the defeat. Six different Blue Raiders had multi-hit games.
MT relief pitcher Devin Conn (1-6) was tagged with loss.
UTSA reliever Karl Craigie (7-0) picked up his second win of the weekend, throwing three innings.
The Blue Raiders will be back home to take on Tennessee Tech Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
