MT to play challenging non-conference slate
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee head coach Chuck Crawford has announced the 2017 Middle Tennessee volleyball schedule, featuring one of the toughest road slates in program history and five matches against teams who competed in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament last season.
The Blue Raiders will face three opponents who appeared in last year's NCAA Tournament in their first four matches, including a pair of teams that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in Missouri and Arizona. MT will also play its first seven games away from Alumni Memorial Gym for the first time since 2007, and will play 13 of its first 14 games away from home to match the road stretch to start the 1996 season.
"I'm very excited about the fall schedule as it will provide us the opportunity to challenge our growth from the spring," Crawford said. "With the addition of our newcomers and returners, I believe we have started the process of being able to consistently compete at a higher level."
The Blue Raiders open the season at the Culver's Governors Challenge hosted by Austin Peay on Aug. 25-26. MT will face UMKC, defending SEC champion Missouri and last year's NCAA Tournament participant in Northern Iowa. The Raiders will then cap the weekend with a neutral site game against Arizona on Aug. 27 at Lipscomb.
In the second weekend of the year, the Raiders travel to Belmont for the Bruiser Showcase Sept. 1-2. MT opens the weekend against Idaho State and UT Arlington on Friday and faces Belmont to close the weekend Saturday.
MT will host Chattanooga on Sept. 5 for the first home match of the season, before traveling to Morehead, Ky. for the Comfort Inn-vitational on Sept. 8-9, featuring Troy, South Carolina State and host Morehead State.
The Blue Raiders conclude their final non-conference tournament with a trip to Moon, Pa. for the Robert Morris Invitational on Sept. 15-16. MT will open the weekend against host Robert Morris and Rutgers on Friday, and square off against Penn on Sunday to conclude the weekend.
Sandwiched in between the conference slate, MT welcomes a pair of former OVC rivals in Tennessee State and Austin Peay on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, respectively, to round out non-conference play.
Conference play begins Sept. 22 with a pair of home matches against UAB on Friday and Marshall on Sunday, Sept. 24. Middle Tennessee will play a pair of home-and-home series in conference play against UAB and another NCAA Tournament participant in WKU.
MT will also host conference foes LA Tech, Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, and FIU.
The regular season concludes with a trip to Denton, Texas for a match against North Texas on Nov. 11 before the C-USA Tournament in Bowling Green on Nov. 17-19.
