MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Head Coach Kermit Davis has reeled in yet another award following a second consecutive historic season of basketball in Murfreesboro, being announced today as the 2017 Tennessee Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year.
A 15-year veteran in the Murphy Center, Davis completes a sweep of top coaching awards by adding to his already acquired Conference USA and NABC District Coach of the Year honors.
"This is truly a great honor in a state full of outstanding coaches at all levels of college basketball," Davis said. "Coach of the Year awards are a tribute to your players and staff as well as the culture of winning you are able to build.
"More importantly, our MT brand continues to grow nationally and I am extremely proud of that."
Davis led the Blue Raiders to a 31-5 record on the year while posting a 17-1 mark in Conference USA play. The 31 overall wins is a school record, surpassing the 28-win mark in 2012-13, and makes the Middle Tennessee just the fourth program in C-USA history to collect 30 wins in a season alongside Cincinnati, Louisville and Memphis.
The 17 league wins also qualified as a record-setting mark as the most league wins in the history of Conference USA men's basketball.
While the Blue Raiders have reached unparalleled success on the court in recent years under Davis, MT's all-time winningest coach, his teams also continue to prove their worth in the classroom each and every year.
The 2016-17 edition of the Blue Raider men's basketball team holds the honor of being one of just six teams in Division I basketball to win a 2017 NCAA Tournament game while also boasting a 100 percent NCAA Graduation Rate. In addition, MT continues to excel in Academic Progress Rate with one of the top three scores in the league for the ninth straight year.
