One of college football's top service awards
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee junior quarterback Brent Stockstill has been named a nominee for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, as announced by the organization Monday.
The AFCA Good Works Team is the most esteemed off-the-field honor in college football, and it honors student-athletes for their outstanding community service achievements and commitment to give back.
Stockstill, the son of Rick and Sara Stockstill, said he has never expected to be recognized for giving back to his community.
"As athletes, we have a lot of opportunities," Stockstill said. "Giving back to the community, and to young people within the community, is a way to show how much we appreciate what people have done for us. To have the opportunity to make a different in people's lives is pretty awesome.
"I enjoy working with children, giving back to the community and trying to make a difference in any way I can. I am appreciative to be recognized and nominated for such a prestigious honor."
Stockstill is involved with charitable organizations and service groups, while also maintaining a strong academic standing.
The rising junior from Murfreesboro, is active in several community efforts, including working with Special Olympics, Special Kids, reading to children in local elementary schools, as well as charitable efforts throughout the year.
Stockstill is one of five C-USA players nominated for the award. The select group of 146 student-athletes nominated for this award by their respective colleges and universities are able to balance academics and athletics while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities.
Stockstill was presented the Terry Whiteside Award for excellence in academics, football, strength training, community service and campus activities in April, 2017.
The student-athletes nominated for this esteemed award embody the true spirit of teamwork and selflessness, donating their limited free time to helping and serving others. From founding a non-profit that helps orphans secure jobs in the workforce to raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research, the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® nominees may wear different jerseys on the field, but they all exemplify a superior commitment to giving back off of it.
"After looking at the bios of the 146 nominees we received for 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it really shows that there are great football student-athletes all over this country who just don't care what happens between the sidelines, but they also care about their community and giving back to others," Todd Berry, AFCA Executive Director said. "The AFCA has been proud to partner with Allstate these past 10 years to honor football players who give more of themselves to help others in need."
