MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 2017 Blue Raider recruiting class has been solidified as one of the best in program history after top prospect Myles Christian decided to forego becoming a Seattle Mariner to enroll at Middle Tennessee this upcoming fall.
Christian, who is the top-ranked outfielder in Mississippi, was drafted by the Mariners in the 18th round with the 543rd pick in the 2017 MLB Draft June 13. The Olive Branch, Miss., native said that the MT coaching staff was a big factor in deciding to come to school at MT.
"I chose to come to Middle Tennessee because of the amazing facilities and the coaching staff," said Christian. "I also wanted a chance to improve my craft on the baseball field."
Head Coach Jim McGuire believes that Christian should have an immediate impact on a very talented 2018 team.
"I know that this was a very tough decision for Myles and his family, but I am very excited that he chose to come to school. He has a chance to be an impact player for us right away and be an even higher draft pick when he leaves here. I can't wait to see him in a Blue Raider uniform."
Christian will be eligible again for the MLB Draft after his sophomore season.
His prowess on the baseball field is not limited to his primary outfield position, as Christian was recently named to the High School ABCA Rawlings Gold Glove Team as an infielder. He is one of nine high schoolers across the entire country to be named to the team.
Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Tim Donnelly, who was big in the recruitment of Christian, is ecstatic to hear the news.
"Anytime you can have an incoming player drafted and turn down a good amount of money to come get their education it's a huge pick up for the program," said Donnelly. "We are very happy to have him come in and get to work with everyone else to achieve our goal of winning a championship."
