QB one of 47 on initial list
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill is one of 47 quarterbacks nationally to be named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List for the 2017 season.
Stockstill, who is also on the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, and Wuerffel Trophy Watch Lists, as well as a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team, is a redshirt junior quarterback on the verge of becoming Middle Tennessee's all-time passing leader.
Stockstill, a redshirt junior, is 21st nationally among active players in career passing yards and fourth in passing yards per game. He owns the Middle Tennessee career records in touchdown passes (61), 300-yard passing games (14), 400-yard passing games (2) and passing yards per game (303.3).
Stockstill suffered a broken collarbone against UTSA last season and missed the final three games of the regular season before returning for the Hawaii Bowl, where he threw for 432 yards and four touchdowns.
Despite missing the final 3-1/2 games of the regular season, Stockstill still threw for 3,233 yards and 31 touchdowns. He averaged 323 yards passing per game and completed 61 percent (262-of-414) of his pass attempts.
Stockstill has completed 65 percent of his 907 career passing attempts while throwing for 7,279 yards in two seasons.
The Golden Arm Award is presented at the end of each football season and the winner is selected based on his accomplishments both on and off the field. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. Stockstill already has a Bachelor's Degree in leisure, sport and tourism studies. He is already enrolled in Graduate School.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation. The Golden Arm Award is the only college football award that has 10 previous recipients still competing in the NFL.
The Golden Arm Award committee will announce the Top 15 finalists for the 2017 Golden Arm Award in September. The 30th anniversary presentation of the Golden Arm Award will be held Friday, Dec. 8 at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor and Grand.
"The Golden Arm Award values character, citizenship, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship – characteristics that were displayed by my father. These attributes were every bit as important as the quarterback's completion rate or number of touchdowns scored," says John C. Unitas, Jr., President of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc. "Despite his many accolades, my dad never forgot his humble beginnings and that won him a permanent place in the hearts of everyone who ever knew him."
The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
