MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A pair of soon-to-be Blue Raiders are headed to the 18U National Tournament in a few short weeks after rolling through the Region III Tournament last week in Greensboro, N.C.
Forward Peyton DePriest and defender Leslie Frye, members of the TSC Showcase club team and incoming freshmen for the Middle Tennessee Soccer program, helped lead their squad to a 6-0 showing in the Region III Tournament while outscoring opponents by a total 32-3 over the six-game stretch.
Nine of the team's 32 goals came from DePriest, leading her to the first golden boot award of her soccer career.
"I've never even gotten that close to winning a golden boot before, but my teammates made me look really good," DePriest said. "It was a really fun tournament and it was great to have that kind of goal-scoring success in a span of just six games."
Frye helped bolster the impressive TSC Showcase defense at her center back position, allowing only three goals in six games and no more than one goal in any of the contests.
"It felt really great to have that kind of success against some other really good teams," Frye said. "Our defense worked really hard and we played well together so that just allowed us to really shut down our opponents."
TSC Showcase will travel to Frisco, Texas, for the national tournament, which begins with a luncheon on July 24. The round robin matches run from July 25-27 with the semifinals and finals taking place on July 29 and 30.
The team had already locked up a spot in the national tournament by winning the National League in Las Vegas back in March, going 7-0, but left no doubt by collecting the Region III title.
"It's a really big deal to make it this far already, but the age groups changed this year so we have kind of new team that's half and half from a couple of different age groups," DePriest said. "We were still able to play really well together and it's really exciting to be going to the national tournament."
"It's a really great feeling to be going to the national tournament, but I'm also very confident that we can win it so I'm really looking forward to it," Frye added.
