Junior on six preseason lists
NEW ORLEANS – The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced its preseason Watch List today and Middle Tennessee's Brent Stockstill is among the 30 top signal-callers on this prestigious list. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, following the bowl season.
Stockstill, who is also on the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Wuerffel Trophy, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and the CFPA National Performer of the Year Watch Lists, as well as a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team, is a redshirt junior quarterback on the verge of becoming Middle Tennessee's all-time passing leader.
Stockstill, a redshirt junior, is 21st nationally among active players in career passing yards and fourth in passing yards per game. He owns the Middle Tennessee career records in touchdown passes (61), 300-yard passing games (14), 400-yard passing games (2) and passing yards per game (303.3).
Stockstill suffered a broken collarbone against UTSA last season and missed the final three games of the regular season before returning for the Hawaii Bowl, where he threw for 432 yards and four touchdowns.
Despite missing the final 3-1/2 games of the regular season, Stockstill still threw for 3,233 yards and 31 touchdowns. He averaged 323 yards passing per game and completed 61 percent (262-of-414) of his pass attempts.
Stockstill has completed 65 percent of his 907 career passing attempts while throwing for 7,279 yards in two seasons.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Inclusion on the Watch List is not necessary for the quarterbacks to be selected for the honor. Midseason additions to the Watch List will be announced on Thursday, October 12. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Thursday, November 30. The winner will be announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
This year's Watch List includes players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.
"We have had the opportunity to recognize 12 outstanding quarterbacks with the Manning Award," said Paul Hoolahan, Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO. "It is truly a great honor for the Allstate Sugar Bowl to sponsor this award and we wish the best of luck to every quarterback and team in the country for another great year of college football."
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
In addition to the Manning Award's yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week. Sixty-one players from 59 different schools were honored during the 2016 season.
