MT again hosts the ITA Regional in October
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis head coach Charlie Ramsay released the 2017-18 schedule today, and it features five matches against Conference USA opponents, including a rematch of last year's C-USA Championship first round showdown.
"We're trying to be a top-75 program, so we tried to put as many teams that have good rankings on our schedule as possible," Ramsay said of his schedule. "The only way to get better is to play teams that are better than us and higher in the rankings."
After the Wally Tidwell Pro-Am fundraiser on Sept. 8-9 at the Adams Tennis Complex, MT will be on the road for three fall tournaments: the South Carolina Hidden Dual on Sept. 15-17, the 25K Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Nashville on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, and the Samford Fall Invite on Oct. 6-8.
The ATC will again be the home of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Oct. 12-16 after a successful event last fall. Many Blue Raiders will compete in this event, and admission is free. MT will close out the fall season with two more road trips. The TCU Invitational is slated for Oct. 27-29, and the Harvard Fall Invitational will be on Nov. 3-5 and will conclude the fall for the Blue Raiders.
Ramsay's team opens the dual match season on Jan. 14 against a pair of in-state foes in Belmont and Austin Peay. MT has a total of six in-state opponents on the 2018 schedule, including a Feb. 23 match at home against Chattanooga. The Mocs earned the win last season on their home courts, but the Blue Raiders will be looking to get their 20th win in the last 25 meetings against Chattanooga.
The Blue Raiders will be taking on five C-USA teams in 2018: North Texas, Old Dominion, WKU, FIU, and Marshall. The match on March 7 against the Mean Green will be the first meeting between the two programs since North Texas beat MT on its home courts in the first round of the C-USA Championship last season. MT has always had spirited matches against WKU in Ramsay's tenure with the Blue Raiders, winning two matches in 2016 before falling in 2017.
"The road schedule is full of teams that are ranked in the top-100 in the country, where we need to be," Ramsay said. "That match with North Texas is on our spring break, and we're playing Brown on that trip, which is a top-75 team and an Ivy League team. North Texas is a lot of fun to play. They've got great facilities, a good team, good coaches, and that's a really fun conference match for us."
The 2018 slate is full of phenomenal non-C-USA matches, including a Jan. 27 match at North Florida. That showdown marks the first road match of the dual season and the first matchup against a team that competed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. MT plays Louisville on Feb. 2 at the ATC. The first road win in Ramsay's career came at Louisville in 2016.
"We worked really hard to get our home schedule. We've got some really good teams coming to our building, such as FIU and Louisville," Ramsay added. "UTC is always a good in-state rivalry for us. They competed hard against us last year, as good as any team that we played on our schedule and they're well-coached as well."
MT returns five student-athletes from last year's squad and added junior-transfer Kim Kermet from Tennessee. The 2018 C-USA Championship is scheduled for April 19-22 in Norfolk, Virginia, hosted by Old Dominion.
