LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Just as the Blue Raiders are about to return to Murfreesboro and open the 2017-18 season, upperclassmen Jenna Burris and Hanley Long have already collected a title to get some momentum going for Middle Tennessee women's golf.
Burris and Long captured the 22nd Annual Tennessee Women's Four-Ball Championship Wednesday at Lookout Mountain Golf Club in runaway fashion, reminiscent of the dominating title run Burris had just four months ago at the Conference USA Championship.
The pair fired back-to-back rounds of 4-under 67 on Tuesday and Wednesday to finish at 8-under par (134) for the tournament, eight strokes ahead of the second-place finishers, and look primed to start the year off well for the Blue Raiders.
"We just went out there and had a lot of fun today," Burris said. "It was really a combined team effort for us the whole tournament. We knew if one of us messed up that the other one would pick up the slack. The ladies we played with today were really fun and it made us have a very enjoyable experience."
The Four-Ball title is the second for the duo, who also took home the trophy in 2015 at Germantown Country Club by just one stroke at 11-under par (66-67=133).
Burris and Long become just the fourth pair to double up at the Tennessee Women's Four-Ball Championship and the first to do so since 2007.
"I think it's a super huge honor to join such a short list of names who have won this tournament twice," Long said. "Playing in a team format when golf is individualized isn't always an easy adjustment mentally so accomplishing a feat of this magnitude says a lot about the players Jenna and I are and how well we play together as teammates.
"Hopefully it will really give us some momentum for the fall season."
Long also became the youngest player ever to win the title the first time around in 2015 at just 18 years, six months and 23 days.
Burris and Long lead the Blue Raiders into the 2017-18 season on Sep. 15 when they tee it up at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
"We're really excited to have them back at the top of our lineup and playing really well as we enter the fall season," Head Coach Chris Adams said. "They all should be playing their best golf right now but it's always nice to win a title and build some momentum going into the season."
