MURFREESSBORO, Tenn. –The Middle Tennessee women's volleyball team begins its 40th season in school history at the Culvers Governors Challenge on Friday, Aug. 25. The team will be led by first-year head volleyball coach Chuck Crawford.
"We have made a lot great strides since day one," said head coach Crawford. "Prior to the official start of preseason I believe the girls did a great job during the summer months and they came in prepared and ready for the season. This weekend we take on two, top-25 teams and we have our hands full but, I think overall the team is making strides every day. One of the biggest things I am seeing with everyone across the board is that we are a family and if you're a family, you're going to compete hard for each other and that is where we are at now".
The squad opens the weekend at the challenge with a match against the UMKC Roos at 10 a.m., followed by an evening match at 5:30 p.m., against No. 19 Missouri. The Blue Raiders wrap up the weekend in Clarksville Saturday evening taking on the Northern Iowa Panthers.
The Blue Raiders return seven of their members this season, including junior outside hitter Regan Coughlin, who led the team in kills (246) last season.
"This season is a lot different than previous seasons," junior Coughlin said. "Everyone on our team has a great intensity, high energy, and a sense of aggression towards the ball. The moves we are making this season are so much more high level and more process-driven than last season. I'm really excited for this year with the team, it's a different season and feeling than last year. You can feel the want to be here and it's a really great atmosphere to be in".
The team will also return senior Sloan Sullivan for her final season as a Blue Raider. Along with Sullivan, Crawford will return Dora Peonia, Makila York, Bailey Mason, Aubrie Huddleston and Vonnie Covington.
Among the seven returners, the Middle Tennessee program welcomes six newcomers to the squad, including three freshmen (Maddie Sweeney, Leilani Mayer and Josie Maxim) and three transfer players (Brienna Tankesley and Taylor Hammill from Auburn, as well as Alyssa Mathis from San Diego State).
The team looks to build upon its record from last season (5-24, 2-12), and aims to make improvements on the offensive and defensive sides of play.
After three matches in Clarksville, the team will travel to Nashville to take on No. 24 Arizona, on Sunday at Allen Arena.
